The 2005 DFB Cup winner was FC Bayern Munich . In the final at the Olympiastadion Berlin , Bayern Munich won 2-1 on May 28, 2005 against FC Schalke 04 , who had eliminated defending champions Werder Bremen on penaltiesin the semifinals.

Both finalists took part in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League , in which Bayern were eliminated in the round of 16 against AC Milan and Schalke moved to third in the group stage in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup , in the semi-finals against eventual winners FC Seville came to an end. Bayer 04 Leverkusen were sixth in the Bundesliga and were allowed to take part in the UEFA Cup, but were eliminated in the first round against Bulgarian champions CSKA Sofia .
