- In Switzerland , Belgium and Yugoslavia , color television is introduced according to the PAL standard.
- The VCR video tape system developed by Philips and Grundig is presented to the public. It is the first commercially successful video system for the home user market. At the time, European manufacturers were leaders in video technology, but did not succeed in conquering the important North American market. Japanese companies such as Sony , Panasonic and JVC dominated this from the mid-1970s .
- January 1 - The US ban on tobacco advertising on radio and television comes into effect.
- November 15 - US company Intel introduces the Intel 4004 , the world's first single-chip processor.

- January 5th - The NDR starts with the 13-part documentary film series Sympathy for the Devil - Signals of Rebellion , which deals critically with youth culture , individual styles of pop music, but also with other pop culture issues such as the myths of cinema.
- January 12 - The sitcom All in the Family premieres on CBS . The series represents one of the first attempts by entertainment television to portray problems such as racism , civil rights or women's movements .
- January 13 - In the ZDF for the first time Diamantendetektiv Dick Donald to see.
- February 13th - ZDF shows the first episode of the music show disco moderated by Ilja Richter . Musical guests in the first episode include The Kinks and Petula Clark .
- March 7th - The children's program The show with the mouse starts in the joint program of ARD ( German television ) under the title Laughter and factual stories for TV beginners . Typical children's questions are answered in a humorous way in short films. Between the contributions is in small cartoons the titular mouse and the little blue elephant to see.
- May 9th - ZDF shows the first episode of the celebrity magazine VIP-Schaukel . Margret Dünser's interview partners include Daliah Lavi , Charles Bronson and Salvador Dalí .
- May 13th - The first episode of the game show Dalli Dalli produced by ZDF and moderated by Hans Rosenthal is broadcast.
- June 6 - The final episode of the Ed Sullivan Show airs on CBS .
- June 29th - With the subtitle "Spätlese, Milde Sorte", the third and final episode of the innovative music program Gogoscope can be seen on ORF television .
- September 9th - The first episode of the Kennzeichen D series can be seen on ZDF. The political magazine is devoted to current events in the two German states and their relationship to one another.
- September 21 - BBC Two airs the first episode of the influential music show The Old Gray Whistle Test . In the course of the history of the show, which was produced until 1987, almost all well-known pop and rock musicians of the time appear.
- October 2nd - The first edition of the music show Soul Train can be received in large parts of the USA . In the 35 years of its existence (until 2006), the series is dedicated to Afro-American forms of music such as gospel , soul or funk and has played a major role in the spread of hip-hop in the later years .
- October 10 - The British private broadcaster ITV broadcasts the first episode of the contemporary family series Upstairs, Downstairs (German: Das Haus am Eaton Place ), which deals with the fate of the British middle-class Bellamy family from 1901, from the Edwardian era to the beginning the Great Depression of 1929, busy.
- December 3 - The episode Pop and Politics of the WDR live discussion series Ende offen is interrupted when panelist Nikel Pallat from Ton Steine smashes broken pieces with an ax on the studio table. Other guests include the producer and pop theorist Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser and Conny Veit von Gila .
- December 5th - The first part of the four-part literary film adaptation of The Sea Wolf after Jack London premieres on ZDF . Harmstorf suddenly became famous through this film, but until the end of his life could hardly emerge from the shadow of the role of the "sea wolf". The film, one of the most frequently performed ZDF productions, is still considered by large parts of the German-speaking audience to be the most successful implementation of the "sea wolf" material.

- March 11 - Philo Farnsworth , American television pioneer, dies in Salt Lake City at the age of 64 .
- April 25th - Anneli Granget , German actress, known from the TV series Hafenkrankenhaus, dies at the age of 35 by suicide in Nuremberg .
- May 16 - Karl Farkas , Austrian cabaret artist and actor dies at the age of 77 in Vienna . Since the beginning of television in Austria, Farkas has been trusted to a wide audience through his cabaret programs, Recorded by the ORF , Balance of the Season , Balance of the Month and the annual New Year's Eve programs.
- June 9th - Heinrich Deiters , German writer, radio play author and journalist dies at the age of 89 in Hamburg . He had been employed by NORAG since 1927 . He has written several radio plays in Low German dialect .
- October 2 - Walther Bullerdiek , German actor (from 1922 until his death at the Ohnsorg Theater ), radio play speaker, and composer dies in Bad Bevensen at the age of 70 .
- December 12 - David Sarnoff , Russian-American media manager and founder of NBC, dies in New York at the age of 80 .
- December 16 - Albert Lieven , German actor, dies in London at the age of 65 . He played leading roles in four Durbridge - street sweepers 1959-1971.
- December 21 - Kaspar Brüninghaus , German actor and radio play speaker, dies in Cologne at the age of 64 .
