The Henry County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 20,145 people and a population density of 17.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Mount Pleasant .

geography

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Iowa, is about 35 km to the east from the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois . To the south, Missouri is around 25 miles away. Henry County covers an area of 1,131 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

history

Henry County was formed on December 7, 1836 on what was then the Wisconsin Territory . It was named either after General James Dougherty Henry or General Henry Dodge .

In 1839 construction began on the first courthouse, which was completed in 1840. Construction of the second courthouse began in 1871 and the third courthouse, which is still in use today, was completed on August 4, 1914.

The county's 46 sites and structures are on the National Register of Historic Places .
