history

Main road
Evangelical Church Nümbrecht

In 1131 Nümbrecht was first mentioned in the papal confirmation of ownership of the Cassius monastery in Bonn (under the name "Nuenbret"); but was probably a settlement as early as the 8th century. The construction of the (today Protestant) church was probably started in 955. 1268–1276, Gottfried I. von Sayn founded Homburg Castle ; the imperial rule of Homburg (Nümbrecht, Wiehl and Marienberghausen ) was one of the many small territories of the empire . The "Homburg Ländchen" enjoyed a relative independence until 1743 under the own dynasty of the Sayn-Wittgenstein family and has been reformed since the second half of the 16th century. The family name "Seinsche", which is still widespread in the area today, recalls the time when people were "Saynisch". Since 1743 the rule of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg was added, the Homburger Ländchen was integrated into the Rhine Confederation in 1806 and came under the rule of Prussia in 1815 after the Congress of Vienna .

In the 19th century Nümbrecht was the center of the Oberberg revival movement , which was largely determined by the Protestant pastor Jakob Gerhard Engels (in Nümbrecht from 1851 until his death in 1897). The Jakob-Engels-Straße and the “Engelsstift”, founded by the Protestant parish, remind of him.

From 1915 to 1957 the Bielstein – Waldbröl small train operated its Nümbrecht station in Homburg-Bröl.

In memory of the Jewish community, there is a memorial on today's village square near the synagogue that was destroyed in 1938 . The Meta-Herz-Strasse commemorates a Jewish citizen of Nümbrechts, who fell victim to the racial madness of the National Socialists ; also some stumbling blocks .

Nümbrecht became a climatic health resort and a climatic health resort and is a destination and starting point for gentle tourism . In 1974 the state horticultural show took place here. In 1995 the Rhein-Sieg-Klinik was opened with specializations in neurology and orthopedics .

After the fall of the iron curtain in 1989, many repatriates found a new home in Nümbrecht.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1969, Nümbrecht was merged with Marienberghausen to form a community that was named Homburg ( law for the reorganization of the Oberbergisches Kreis ). At the request of the municipality, the name was changed to Nümbrecht .

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows the two white towers with battlements as a symbol of the castle on a red background. While the left tower is higher, above the right one, as a sign of the solidarity between the community of Nümbrecht and the Princely House of Sayn-Wittgenstein, there is a little sign with four fields, each with the Homburg lion and black bars on a silver background. In the middle, a silver gate with portcullis can be seen under a gable .

The original text on the coat of arms has survived: “The municipality of Nümbrecht has the symbol of the castle and the Homburg rule in its coat of arms, which Count Ludwig von Sayn-Wittgenstein , the representative of the younger line of the Sayn family, in the Siegburg comparison 1604 after the last count von Sayn, Heinrich IV. , had renounced his share in the rulership of Homburg, from the Sayn coat of arms included in his ”.

On the occasion of the regional reform in the 1960s, the district president of Cologne decreed on August 6, 1970 that the current municipality of Nümbrecht may continue to use the historical coat of arms.

Buildings

Homburg Castle
  • Homburg Castle
  • The 1000-year-old church in Nümbrecht is historically one of the most interesting sacred buildings in the Oberbergischer Kreis : massive Romanesque tower, heavy medieval pillars and girdle arches in the interior, delicately structured Gothic choir , flat vaults from the end of the 17th century , baroque dome and remarkable, also baroque ones Principal pieces .
  • The 150-year-old “orphanage” on today's village square was built in 1856 as a supplement to the orphanage of the Protestant parish that was founded in 1850 on the main street next to the historic rectory. It served as a meeting room for the orphanage family and was still used for presbytery meetings and confirmation classes even after the orphanage was closed in 1909. Since 1987 it housed the tea room of the local YMCA and since 2002 the Diakoniestation of the Protestant parish.
  • The Bunte Kerke (church with medieval wall paintings) in Marienberghausen . The church differs significantly from other medieval fortified churches through repeated renovations . Only the west tower from the 12th century remains of the original church . The late Gothic picture collection inside has been preserved. The familiar themes of the wall paintings reappeared in 1910 when an organ was rebuilt after they had all been whitewashed during the Reformation . The church is one of the few in the Rhineland that has an unadulterated collection of late Gothic paintings.
  • The Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit built in 1975 by the architect Hans Joachim Lohmeyer , houses the altar cross by Wolfgang Göddertz , and since 1994 a Madonna by Hanne Wagenknecht .
  • Holstein's mill and the Lindscheider mill
  • The column fountain in the spa gardens of Nümbrecht is the work of the sculptor Michael Schwarze . Created on the occasion of the State Garden Show in Nümbrecht in 1974. The figures of the fountain symbolize the ancient will of man to free himself from the constraints of life. The female figures: symbol of beauty and fertility . The fists: an expression of violence and assertiveness. The hand : a sign of understanding and creating. The male leg: a sign of progress and conquest .
  • Especially in the village of Bruch to the northeast of Nümbrecht there are well-preserved half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • The “ecological village of the future” , Benroth . The “eco-village” Benroth is about 5 km from Nümbrecht. The ecological transformation through small and large measures (for example wetlands , dry stone walls , hedges , desettlement) can be seen in the appearance of the village. The approximately one-hour walk ("eco mile") through the village provides an interesting insight into the project. Even today, many voluntary members of the non-profit association Benroth eV are committed to living up to the title “Ecological Village of the Future”.
  • Amiger studs: The iron ore - tunnel is about 200 to 300 years old. The tunnel is located below the Alfred Lang refuge and the observation tower in the “In der Goldkaule” forest area, the tunnel length is around 20 meters. According to tradition, however, the tunnel should lead to the village of Ödinghausen. Today the entrance is closed with a gate.
  • Lookout tower "Auf dem Lindchen" in Nümbrecht (341 m above sea level, 154 steps, 34 m high). After extensive renovation of the wooden tower , the viewing platform has again offered a good view of the Rhine ( Siebengebirge ) and the Rothaargebirge since spring 2016 .

Memorials

  • War memorial for the dead of the First and Second World Wars .
  • Memorial for the fallen soldiers of the First World War in the Evangelical Church in the so-called "Herrenkeller".
  • The memorial at the Jewish cemetery was inaugurated on May 28, 1995. It was created with the help of a working group in the community with the participation of the sculptor Marianne Roetzel from Harscheid. There is a memorial stone on old paving stones, this is supplemented by seven pillars. They symbolize the menorah , the seven-armed candlestick.
  • Memorial stone in memory of the former synagogue on today's village square.
  • Grave site of the important revival preacher and pastor Pastor Jakob Gerhard Engels (1826–1897) on the north side of the Nümbrecht cemetery.
  • Commemorative plaque for the successor of Engels and long-time pastor Johannes Conrad (1871–1957), on the grave of Jakob Gerhard Engels.
  • Memorial stone for Johannes Bonekämper (1796–1857), the “pioneer of the gospel” among German emigrants in southern Russia and the inspirer of Russian stundism, in the west of the Nümbrecht cemetery.

Natural monuments

Thick stones
Hexenweiher in autumn 2008
  • "Below Homburg Castle , in a beech forest on a gently sloping slope, there are two groups of approximately 5 m high cliffs , which the population calls" thick stones ". The rock of the cliffs is a dense, tough, reddish-gray quartz rock with numerous inclusions of the surrounding sandstone. The thick stones have been interpreted in different ways ". They were previously called "erratic blocks" , Brinkmann & Müller-Miny (1965) saw them as Devonian quartzites and Strässer (1967) interpreted them as silicified (quartz) keratophyr (= volcanic gangue from feldspars and chlorites with possibly increased Quartz content (quartz keratophyr) , which, due to its greater resistance to weathering, was weathered as a hardy . A detailed mineralogical investigation in the geological state office in Krefeld (1970) has shown that it is quartz veins of hydrothermal origin. "Relics of igneous rock could not be found in any of the deposits, so that Strässer's view (1967) is to be regarded as invalid; a quartzite (Müller-Miny 1965) is just as unavailable".
  • Hexenweiher are two ponds (ponds) below the village of Spreitgen . Whether so-called “ witch tests” were carried out here in the early modern period, as assumed, has not been historically proven.
