Jens Weißflog (born July 21, 1964 in Steinheidel-Erlabrunn ) is a former German ski jumper . He is one of the five athletes (besides him Espen Bredesen , Thomas Morgenstern , Matti Nykänen and Kamil Stoch ) who have won the four most important competitions in ski jumping ( Olympics , World Championships , Overall World Cup and Four Hills Tournament ). Weißflog is the only athlete who was able to win an individual medal at the Olympic Games in both the parallel style and the V-style (see ski jumping technique ).
Career
Jens Weißflog grew up in Pöhla and has lived since attending the children's and youth sports school in Oberwiesenthal , where he belonged to the SC tractor .
As a 19-year-old, the ski jumper - often called "Flea vom Fichtelberg" because of his slim stature and low body weight - won the Four Hills Tournament for the first time at the turn of the year 1983/1984. This season he became Olympic champion on the normal hill in Sarajevo and won the overall World Cup.
In the following years, Weißflog dominated the ski jumping world together with the outstanding Finn Matti Nykänen : in 1985 and 1989 he won gold at the World Championships (and a total of nine other podium placements), in 1984, 1985, 1991 and 1996 he won the Four Hills Tournament. In 1991 he received the Holmenkollen Medal .
The uniqueness of his success lies in the fact that Jens Weißflog was able to maintain his level over twelve years. Neither the system change from the GDR to the Federal Republic in 1990 nor the conversion of the ski jumping technique from the parallel to the V style around 1993 could set him back in the long term. In 1994 he won two gold medals on the large hill and with the team at the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer .
In 1996 he crowned his career with the fourth overall victory in the Four Hills Tournament, after which he retired from competitive sports. In June 1996 Jens Weißflog held a farewell gala on the Fichtelbergschanze in Oberwiesenthal, where he again competed in a mat jumping and said goodbye to Janne Ahonen in second place with a hill record (102 meters) .
Weißflog is the most successful German ski jumper, internationally only the Finns Matti Nykänen and Janne Ahonen as well as Adam Małysz from Poland and the Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer have won more World Cups . Weißflog won three Olympic gold medals. He is also a four-time winner of the Four Hills Tournament, only Janne Ahonen has achieved five wins.
After his Olympic victories in Lillehammer, he was made an honorary citizen of Oberwiesenthal on February 27, 1994 . In 2003 the Planetoid 2000 WX158 discovered on November 30, 2000 in the Drebach public observatory (Erzgebirge) was named after Jens Weißflog. It now bears the official name (22168) Weissflog and moves between the planets Mars and Jupiter around the sun.
