The Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest is the largest art museum in Hungary and one of the most important art collections in the world. It houses objects from ancient Egypt, antiquity and European art history from the 13th to the 21st centuries. In German-speaking countries, the name of the museum is usually translated as “Museum of Fine Arts” or “Museum of Fine Arts” . The museum is located next to Heroes' Square ( Hősök tere ) at Dózsa György út 41 in the XIV district of Budapest.

On the occasion of the Budapest Millennium Exhibition in 1896 , Parliament passed a law establishing a “National Museum of Fine Arts” and the construction of a suitable building in Budapest. For this purpose, the state made a sum of 3,200,000 crowns available, of which 1,200,000 crowns alone were estimated for the construction of a suitable building.

The tender for the museum was issued in September 1898 and should be decided by an international jury. It was decided in favor of the plans of the builders Albert Schickedanz and Fülöp Herzog . Construction work began in the summer of 1900 and was completed in 1906. On December 1, 1906, the museum was officially opened in the presence of King Franz Joseph .

An impressive collection of paintings, drawings and graphics was exhibited right from the start. There was also a collection of plaster casts that documented the development of sculpture from ancient times to the 19th century.

From February 2015 to the end of October 2018, the museum closed for an extensive renovation, during which the permanent collections were also redesigned.

Long before the museum opened, the Hungarian state benefited from donations from numerous art collectors who donated their collections to the entire Hungarian people. It all started in 1802 with Count Ferenc Széchényi , who donated the first public collection in Hungary, the Hungarian National Museum . Although this collection was primarily intended to show Hungarian national monuments, numerous works of art were already part of the museum's holdings at that time.

In the following years, the collection grew continuously through further donations and purchases. However, it was not until the years 1832 to 1836 that significant works of non-Hungarian origin came into the museum with the collection of the Pest collector Miklós Jankovich . In addition to several old German panel paintings, there was also a male portrait of Jacopo Tintoretto , the Godfather picture by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo and a Madonna statuette by Andrea Pisano . Even more important was the donation of 192 panel paintings by the Archbishop of Eger, László Pyrker , who owned such important works as the portrait of Katharina Cornaro by Gentile Bellini and the portrait of a young man attributed to Giorgione .

In 1848, the imperial administrator of Hungary, Lajos Kossuth , had 78 paintings from the apartment of the chamber chairman handed over, which came from the holdings of Buda Castle and can be partially identified in the famous Brussels picture gallery of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm . Other paintings that remained in the castle were auctioned off in 1856, so that over the years, through various Hungarian private collections, individual additional works also came to the picture gallery.

The purchase of the world-famous Esterházy Collection (1870/71) by the Hungarian state, which comprised 637 paintings, 3,500 drawings and around 51,000 graphics, was of immense importance . These included works by Raffael , Correggio and Rubens . This collection was transferred to a Landesgemäldegalerie, which, for lack of its own house, was first exhibited in the Academy of Sciences.

In the following year, the Landesgemäldegalerie received another valuable donation of 64 pictures that the bishop and art historian Arnold Ipolyi had collected . These included numerous pictures that had been auctioned off in 1869 with the collection of the painter Johann Anton Ramboux in Cologne. These were mainly Gothic works .

In 1875 the works of art kept in the Hungarian National Museum were transferred to the Landesgemäldegalerie, the holdings of which were further expanded through some lucky acquisitions.

But not only the picture gallery grew beyond the existing exhibition space, the holdings of antiques and sculptures already existing at the time also experienced a continuous increase. On a shopping trip through Italy, the director at the time, Károly Pulszky , bought 121 works of art by Italian artists in addition to paintings in 1894/95. These included works by Agostino di Duccio and Michelozzo Michelozzi .

In order to do justice to the lack of space and the importance of the already assembled collection, it was decided in 1896 to build a new building and found the Szépművészeti Múzeum.

The time up to the Second World War

In 1901 the museum in Vienna bought the estate of the painter and collector István Delhaes, comprising 2,683 drawings of works by German and Austrian artists of the 18th century.

Between 1908 and 1913, great attention was paid to adding original works to the collection of antiques, which until now had mainly consisted of plaster casts. At the suggestion of Antal Hekler , the museum acquired 135 Greek, Roman and Italian sculptures from the Paul Arndt Collection in Munich , and later 650 statuettes made of terracotta . Around 1907, Egyptian antiquities came into the Hungarian state for the first time, which had been excavated by a Polish Egyptologist and were later given to the museum.

In 1912 the foundation followed from the estate of Count János Pálffy, which included 121 old master paintings as well as 56 works from the 19th century. Among the pictures were works by Titian , Paolo Veronese , Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio and Petrus Christus . Two years later, the estate of the important Hungarian sculptor István Ferenczys was bought, which contained 83 works of art, mainly acquired in Italy, including the famous so-called Budapest Rider , which is widely regarded as an autograph work by Leonardo da Vinci .

The following years were rather determined by individual foundations in all areas before in 1934, due to the Venice Agreement concluded in 1932, Austria gave several works of art to Hungary as compensation for Hungarian works of art they had taken over. Also in 1934, the Council of Ministers Pál Majovszky donated a 259-sheet collection of drawings to the museum, mainly by French artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Including works by Edgar Degas , Eugène Delacroix , Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Cézanne .

In the same year, the Hungarian government passed a museum law, which designated the museum as the sole central repository of ancient monuments, so that numerous holdings from other museums flowed into the collections in the following years. Among them were also many ancient Egyptian pieces, so that the museum was able to establish its own department.

At the end of the Second World War , the museum suffered severe damage. During the last months of the war in 1944, the then fascist-minded director of the museum had the most valuable part of the holdings hurriedly transported and deported to Germany , with many pictures suffering serious damage and a few panels being lost to this day. In 1946 and 1947, however, most of the works returned. Nevertheless, the museum was resumed immediately after the end of the war. As early as 1945 and again in the following year, the museum managed to secure several important French pictures from the Herzog Collection , including works by Camille Corot , Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir .

By 1949, the war damage had been repaired to such an extent that a permanent exhibition of paintings and sculptures could be reopened on the upper floor of the museum building. Just two years later, the museum took over the painting collection of the well-known art collector György Ráth , whose collection had been bequeathed to the Museum of Applied Arts in 1905. These included pictures by Dirck Hals , Frans Snyders , Sebastiano del Piombo and a picture of a slaughtered ox, which was then still attributed to Rembrandt van Rijn . In the same year, a major Courbet work was also acquired with the wrestlers .

In 1953, a new regulation to reorganize the collection areas of the individual museums in Budapest gave the museum an extensive collection of German, Austrian and Dutch paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and a few older Italian works by Count Jenő Zichy der The city of Budapest.

From 1964 the museum took part in excavations in Nubia, which expanded the museum's Egyptian collection so much that it first had to be rearranged in 1972 and then again in 1983.

The museum also hit international headlines in 1983 when seven valuable paintings were stolen from the Old Masters collection, including two each by Raffael and Jacopo Tintoretto and one each by Giambattista Pittoni , Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo . After a short time, the pictures could be saved and returned to the museum.

The collections

Egyptian collection

The museum offers a good overview of the development of ancient Egyptian art and can present interesting works of art from almost every era. Including some world-class works, such as the upper part of a king statue made of diorite, from the Middle Kingdom, and a man's head made of limestone, from the New Kingdom, which also forms the main piece of the entire collection. In addition, there are numerous steles, painted mummy coffins and numerous statuettes. Noteworthy is a necklace made of 36 gold figurines of the goddess Theoris from the Ptolemaic period , which already forms a transition to the collection of antiquities.

Collection of antiquities

The antiquities collection mainly includes Greek and Roman works of art, but also houses an important collection of Cypriot antiquities and works from Sicily and North Africa. Significant works are mainly a young man torso from Perinthos, called the Budapest dancer , the torso of Doryphoros of Poliklet that Actium relief , a Capuan Niobe and numerous busts of Greek and Roman times. This is followed by a collection of more than a thousand small sculptures made of terracotta and antique vessels. A showpiece of the vase collection is the so-called Grimani jug , an early bronze jug that was made in the 5th century BC. Was made in the Peloponnese. The collection of classic, painted vases includes works by Exekias , the Andokides painter , the swing painter , the Brygos painter , the Geras painter and the Meleagros painter .

Old Masters Picture Gallery

Today it comprises more than 2,500 pictures and is the center of the museum. It presents a comprehensive overview of European painting from the 13th to the 18th century and shines with a number of major works, so that it can be counted among the most important collections of old masters in the world.

Collection of old sculptures

In addition to the old master paintings, the old sculptures are among the most popular works of art in the museum. It houses an extensive collection, mainly by Italian masters, who are joined by works from other schools. In addition to the Italian masters, the collection with German and Austrian sculptures from the 14th to 18th centuries shines, with works from the workshop of Hans Multscher and Tilman Riemenschneider as well as handwritten works by Hans Leinberger , Leonhard Kern and Georg Raphael Donner and Franz Xaver Messerschmidt are standing. The sculpture schools of the Netherlands, France and Spain are represented with only a few works, of which works by Adriaen de Vries and a Cupid by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle stand out.

With around 10,000 drawings and 100,000 engravings, it is one of the largest collections in the world and offers a comprehensive overview of European art history from the 14th to the 20th centuries. Modern art collection

The collection is one of the busiest sections of the museum and presents the art of the 19th and 20th centuries, which was brought together relatively late. The focus of the collection are the paintings by French masters of the 19th and early 20th centuries as well as the German masters of the 19th century. The museum also has a collection of plastic works from this period, including works by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux , Fritz Cremer , Charles Despiau , Aristide Maillol , Constantin Meunier , George Minne , Auguste Rodin and Bertel Thorvaldsen .
