The district of Northern Pomerania was a district that was enlarged in the course of the district reform in 2011 and renamed the district of Western Pomerania-Rügen a few days later .
geography
The district of North Western Pomerania was in the north of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The district had a long coastline along the Baltic Sea in the north . Neighboring districts were in the northeastern district of Rügen , in the east of Mecklenburg Western Pomerania , in the southern district Demmin and Güstrow and in the west of the district of Bad Doberan . The independent city of Stralsund protrudes from the Baltic Sea in the northeast into the district area.
The most important rivers in Northern Pomerania are the Recknitz , Trebel and Barthe . The district area also includes the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain south of the Baltic Sea, which is an important tourist area.
history
The district of North Western Pomerania was formed in 1994 from the former GDR districts of Stralsund , Grimmen and Ribnitz-Damgarten . The historical border between Pomerania and Mecklenburg was disregarded as the Ribnitz-Damgarten district also included some former Mecklenburg communities in a small strip west of the Recknitz.
In the course of a district reform in 2011 , the districts of Northern Pomerania, Rügen and the Hanseatic City of Stralsund became parts of the new district of Western Pomerania-Rügen (planning name: District of Northern Pomerania ) with its administrative headquarters in Stralsund.

The district (constituency number 57) consists of 165 electoral districts with 97,807 eligible voters. There were 46,411 who cast 6,064 invalid and 128,970 valid votes. This corresponds to a voter turnout of around 47.5% (all data from 2004).

The coat of arms was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on December 3, 1997 and registered under the number 142 of the coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Blazon : “Split by blue and gold; in front a golden griffin turned to the left with a knocked out red tongue and a raised tail; behind a black griffin with a knocked out red tongue and a raised tail, the two lower flight feathers of the flight silver. "
The coat of arms was designed by Gerhard Koggelmann from Sagard .

Territory changes
In the years since 1994, extensive area changes have taken place in the area of the district of North Western Pomerania as in the entire state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
After the completion of the regional reform on January 1, 2005, the original twelve offices became eight offices. The cities of Barth and Ribnitz-Damgarten lost their freedom of office. The number of municipalities decreased from 97 to 70. Through further incorporations in the course of 2009, the number of municipalities decreased to 64.
