Pöllauberg with 2040 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is a municipality in the judicial district of Fürstenfeld or Hartberg-Fürstenfeld ( Styria , Austria ).

Geographical location

Pöllauberg is located in Joglland about ten kilometers west of the district capital Hartberg and about 38 km northeast of the provincial capital Graz . The community belongs to the Pöllauer Tal nature park and is located above Pöllau on the left bank of the Pöllauer Safen . The community is drained by numerous tributaries of the Pöllauer Safen - mainly from the Rauschbach. The highest point in the municipality is the Masenberg in the far north with a height of 1261  m .

• Oberneuberg (759) with Brandstatt, Dreihöf, Ertlhöf, Gimpelhöf, Hausberg, Hochstraße, Holzhöf, Muggental, Multerleiten, Pikeroi, Point, Pöllauberg, Sattel, Schachengraben, Schweighof, Spitzberg, Wiesberg and Winzenberg
• Untereuberg (546) with Breitenbach, Goldsberg, Obersalberg, Pikeroi, Salberg and Untersalberg
• Zeil-Pöllau (735) with Dörfl, Lehenberg, Retterhöf, Safenberg and Sauberg

Today's municipality of Pöllauberg was created on February 1, 1968 by merging the independent municipalities of Oberneuberg, Untersteuberg and Zeil-Pöllau.

history

Margrave Leopold donated the ministerial property to the ancestor of the Stubenberger , Wulfing , around 1125 to 1128 . This included the area of ​​today's municipality of Pöllauberg. Wulfing von Stubenberg began to settle the mountain slopes above Pöllau. In 1685 provost Michael Josef Maister of the Pöllau Abbey founded the first school in Pöllauberg, his successor Ortenhofen elevated Pöllauberg to a parish. Pöllauberg came to Oberneuberg and became a municipality in the new Pöllau district in 1818.

Gerald Klein (ÖVP) has been mayor since 2019. In the constituent meeting of the municipal council on April 17, 2015, the trust was again expressed to him. It is noteworthy that Weiglhofer has resigned his council mandate because he would like to act as “People's Mayor” again.

On September 15, 1975, the municipality of Pöllauberg was granted the right to use its own coat of arms by the Styrian state government.

Regional policy

Pöllauberg is, together with Pöllau, a member of the Pöllauer Tal Nature Park Tourist Association and, together with it, of the LEADER region of Eastern Styria . On December 7, 2010, the Pöllauer Tal Nature Park was also constituted as a small region .

Pöllauberg is away from the main roads. The community can be reached primarily via side roads of the state road running in the Pöllauer Safen valley. The south autobahn A2 from Vienna to Graz is about 17 km away and can be reached via the Hartberg junction (115). The distance to Wechsel Straße B 54 from Wiener Neustadt via Hartberg to Gleisdorf is about 14 km.

Pöllauberg is not connected to the railway network. There is no train station within ten kilometers.

The Graz Airport is about 65 km away.

• Parish and pilgrimage church Maria Pöllauberg : The pilgrimage to Pöllauberg began at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century with the worship of an image of Mary. A Romanesque chapel was built on the site of today's Anna Church, which was mainly visited on Saturdays, which gave the mountain the name "Saturday Mountain". The construction of today's pilgrimage church Maria Pöllauberg in Gothic style began around 1340 . The founder was Katharina von Stubenberg. What is remarkable about the building of the church is the two- aisled nave with three bays and ribbed vaults , while the choir and vestibule are extended to three naves. The church is located below the original chapel on the mountain, which slopes steeply on three sides. The main portal in the west can only be reached via 18 steps. In 2009, barrier-free access was set up on the left. This means that access from the main square is possible without steps. The walls of the church are mostly exposed stone , only the west facade was made of stone . The interior still contains a Gothic statue of Mary as a miraculous image from the 15th century, otherwise most of it comes from the Baroque : the high altar was built by Marx Schokotnigg and his son Joseph between 1710 and 1730; the organ on the organ gallery with rich stucco dates from 1684. The Gothic tower was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1674 and replaced in 1678 by a baroque tower, which was extended in 1872 by a tower cross. The pilgrimage site is one of the most important in Styria and is visited by around 100,000 believers every year.
• The branch church of St. Anna stands a little higher next to the pilgrimage church and is the initial Lady Chapel of the parish. The originally Romanesque chapel was enlarged in 1532 and later redesigned in Baroque style . The current altar with the picture of St. Anne dates from 1644. The Anna Church partly contains furnishings from the pilgrimage church Maria Pöllauberg, which were no longer needed there after redesigning.
• As part of the European Entente Florale Europe competition , Pöllauberg was named the most beautiful flower village in Europe in 1986 and was awarded a gold medal in the village category.
• In 2003, Pöllauberg was named the most beautiful flower village in Styria - an award that Pöllauberg has received several times since 1985.
• In 2009 the East Styrian community won the election for the most beautiful spot in Styria organized by the Kleine Zeitung .
