Women Men

The women's ice hockey tournament at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang took place from February 10 to 22, just like at the Games in Sochi , with eight national teams. The games were played in the Kwandong Hockey Center (Korean: 가톨릭 관동대 학교 아이스 하키 II 경기장 ), which holds 6,000 spectators. The semifinals and the final, however, took place in the Gangneung Hockey Center (Korean: 강릉 아이스 하키 I 경기장 ), which can hold 10,000 spectators . Both stadiums are located in the coastal town of Gangneung .

The gold medal went to the USA , who defeated four-time Olympic champion Canada 3-2 in the penalty shootout in the final. It was the first gold medal win for the United States since the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano . Third place and thus the bronze medal went to Finland .

The eight teams of the Olympic ice hockey tournament were divided into two groups of four teams each in the preliminary round. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams in the IIHF world rankings after the 2016 World Cup according to the following key:

The teams in places 1 to 4 of the world rankings were in group A, while place 5 and hosts Korea were in group B. Group B was supplemented by the two winners of the qualification groups.

CanadaCanada Canada (2) SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland (6)
FinlandFinland Finland (3) JapanJapan Japan (7)
OlympiaOlympic Athletes from Russia Olympic athletes from Russia (4) KoreaAll-Korean team Korea (23)

Within the groups, the teams initially played according to the everyone-versus-everyone mode , so that each team initially played three games. The first two of the higher placed Group A qualified directly for the semifinals, while the third and fourth placed of Group A and the first two of Group B played against each other in the quarterfinals. The winners of the semi-finals then competed in the final for the gold and silver medals and the losers in the semi-finals in the game for third place for the bronze medal.
