Roseanne is an American sitcom produced by ABC from 1988 to 1997 . In Germany, the series was shown on ProSieben from 1990 .
From March to May 2018, the series continued with a tenth season. In Germany, the broadcast of the new edition was planned for late summer 2018 on the Disney Channel . After the series was canceled by ABC, however, it was announced that the series would no longer be broadcast. Repetitions of the original series have also been removed from the program.

The focus of the series is on the working class Conner family, who live at 714 Delaware Street in the fictional town of Lanford, Fulton County (Illinois) and consist of mother Roseanne ( Roseanne Barr ), father Daniel, called Dan ( John Goodman ), and children Rebecca, called "Becky" ( Alicia Goranson / Sarah Chalke ), Darlene ( Sara Gilbert ) and David Jacob, called "D. J. “( Michael Fishman ). Later son Jerry Garcia joined them. This one was born on Roseanne's favorite holiday , Halloween .
The plot revolves mainly around the bigger and smaller problems of everyday life and does not exclude topics like unemployment , financial worries, hasty marriage of children and divorce. The Conners solve these problems with their somewhat different humor.

The humor of the series is based on the leading actress Roseanne Barr, who became known as a stand-up comedian in the 1980s , and the ironic gallows humor with which she went about her not always easy everyday life as Roseanne, a typical American woman of the lower middle class or the working class . This also marked, together with the series A Terribly Nice Family , which was produced around the same time , a turn away from the "ideal world" of the Huxtables .
In the last episode of the ninth season it turns out that the entire series plot was based only on Roseanne's records about her family and that the ninth season in particular was only her imagination in terms of its sequence and content. This turn of events is prepared by flashbacks to the furnishings in Roseanne's office in the basement. At the end of the last episode, Roseanne reveals herself as an off-screen author, who wanted to come to terms with the loss of her husband with her work and who rearranged the stories at will. For example, she switched her daughters' partners because she believed the couples would be a better match. The ninth season can be interpreted psychologically in retrospect. So is z. B. Roseanne
At first she worked at Wellman Plastics. Your boss there, Booker Brooks, is played by George Clooney . Then comes a lousy job as a phone magazine seller and shampoo girl at the local beauty salon. Then she works as a waitress in a shopping mall restaurant. Eventually she founds a fast food restaurant, the Lanford Lunch Box , with her sister Jackie, her mother Beverly and friend Nancy . After an argument with Roseanne and Jacky, Beverly sells her share of the lunch box to Roseanne's former boss Leon in revenge .
Dan
In season one, Dan works as a drywall builder in his own company, Four Aces Constructions, and dreams of building his own boat in his garage. But this will never be completed. He later ran a motorcycle shop. In this shop he gives Becky's friend Mark a job as a mechanic. He later heads the Lanford City Vehicle Workshop. Mark and Jackie's later husband Fred also work in this workshop again. He quit this job, which was good and safe by US standards, to work with friends in his original field and to help erect a prison. At Darlene's wedding, he suffers a heart attack, which he survives. In the last episode it turns out that Roseanne only writes one book and Dan died of this heart attack in "real" life.
Jackie
Roseanne's sister initially also works at Wellman Plastics. Later she is a police officer. After being injured on duty, she becomes a truck driver. On one of her tours, she discovers the schnitzel meat sandwich, whereupon she and her sister open the Lunchbox restaurant . During the whole time Jackie has several male acquaintances who are more or less serious. These include, for example, men like her boss Booker (George Clooney) at Wellman, Gary, with whom she is together as a cop, or Fisher, who abuses her. During the series (6th season) she and Fred have their son Andy. They later get married. But then irreconcilable differences arise and the marriage falls apart.
Becky
The oldest daughter of the Conners loves to go shopping and she loves to talk on the phone. She is very interested in boys and often goes out with a boy. In some episodes she gets into an argument with her mother because her phone bill is very high or she comes home late. In the first few seasons, she also likes to fight with her sister Darlene because they have to share a room. In contrast to Darlene, she is a very good and committed student. In the third season she meets Mark Healy, with whom she later runs away and whom she secretly marries. When she returns in the sixth season, she moves to a trailer park .
Darlene
Darlene is a very sporty girl. She only wears a skirt or a dress in exceptional cases and is very boyish . Becky tries in such exceptional cases (appointments, balls, ...) to help her and to get her excited about a woman's weapons, but Darlene feels very uncomfortable in this role as a girly. She prefers to play basketball and often throws a few baskets with her father in the backyard. Increasingly, however, she also reveals artistic creativity and a critical spirit. She is moving away from home for three years at the end of Season 5 to study at a college in Chicago. When she later meets Mark's brother David, she falls in love with him. At the end of Season 8, they get married because Darlene is pregnant. Dan had a heart attack at the wedding. Darlene has a daughter, who is born much too early. Her daughter wins the long struggle for life in the incubator and is released in the final episodes. Darlene names the child after the three generations of women in the series "Harris Conner Healy".
DJ
David Jacob "DJ" Conner is the youngest child of the Connors until the birth of his little brother Jerry Garcia in Season 8. He often suffers from the taunts of his two older sisters. He often had problems at school. In season 5, he's the one who comes up with the name Lunchbox for the family restaurant.

At the beginning of the series, Roseanne, Jackie and Crystal work on the assembly line at the plastic goods company Wellman . Jackie is briefly in a relationship with Wellman department head Booker Brooks. Dan sporadically finds work as a drywall builder and has to get along with his irresponsible father Ed. Roseanne and Jackie's parents, Al and Beverly, consider moving to Lanford, but decide against it. Darlene is torn between her cool athletic image and her femininity when she gets her first period. Becky has her first boyfriend, Chip, whom she leaves because of Jimmy Meltrigger. When the season ends, Roseanne gets into a big conflict with the new Wellman department head, Mr. Favor, and resigns from Wellman ; several other employees (including Jackie and Crystal) do the same.

Roseanne keeps her head above water with odd jobs as a magazine seller on the phone, secretary for Dan's boss, barmaid in Lanford's pub LOBO , waitress in a snack bar and “girl for everything” in the local beauty salon Cindy Lou . Jackie becomes a cop. Dan's poker friend Arnie ( Tom Arnold ) is making his debut on the series. The Conners celebrate Halloween, which will be an integral part of the series in the future. At Thanksgiving, Dan notices the romance between his father and Roseanne's girlfriend, Crystal. Jackie becomes engaged to her boyfriend Gary. Becky is increasingly rebelling against her parents' authority. Darlene discovered her talent for writing when she won a school poetry competition. Dan's father Ed marries Roseanne's friend Crystal, who is also pregnant by Ed. Roseanne finds herself in a feud with her new, seemingly snobbish neighbor, Kathy Bowman. Roseanne's grandmother Nana Mary appears for the first time at a family barbecue in the series. The season begins with Becky surprising her mother with the desire for the birth control pill. After an unsuccessful job as a perfume seller, Jackie is trained as a trucker. Dan and Roseanne's friends Arnie and Nancy get married in Las Vegas. Darlene develops into an introverted teenager and begins to dress in black according to the Gothic style. Roseanne's neighbor, Kathy Bowman, is moving away with her family. After suffering from severe back pain for a long time, Roseanne is undergoing a breast reduction to relieve her back. The Rodbell’s restaurant where Roseanne works is being streamlined. Arnie leaves Nancy on the pretext of being "abducted by aliens". Season 5

Although Roseanne has great doubts at first, she finally lets Darlene move to Chicago to study.
Season 6

Under Roseanne's pressure to leave the lunch box , Beverly surrenders her share of the lunch box in revenge to none other than Roseanne's former boss Leon. David suggests to Darlene that they get engaged, but Darlene denies it. Under the pretext of reconciling with his mother and wanting to follow her to Michigan, David also ends up in Darlene's Chicago dormitory and stays with her until Roseanne finds out and forcing him to return home. Roseanne is caught up in her past as a victim of violence by her father Al when she beats up DJ for stealing her car. Season 7

Her son, whom she names after her favorite musician, Jerry Garcia , is born on Roseanne's favorite holiday, Halloween . Leon marries his friend Scott and Roseanne turns it into a crazy gay wedding. When Darlene finds out that she is pregnant by David, they marry, but the wedding evening ends in disaster when Dan suffers a heart attack.
Season 9

The last season stands in complete, sometimes very surreal contrast to the previous series, because the Conners make a lottery win of US $ 108 million and can finally afford a life in luxury. Dan ponders the meaning of life from now on, Jackie meets her “dream prince”, DJ has his first girlfriend Heather, Roseanne's mother Beverly reveals herself to be a lesbian, and Darlene gives birth to her daughter Harris. Dan, who has a brief, insignificant "romance" with one of his mother's nurses, gets into a serious conflict with Roseanne. After a temporary separation they get along again, and at the beginning of the last episode you learn that Becky is pregnant from Marc and both are happy to be able to tell the others soon.
But the last episode surprisingly reveals at the end that Roseanne, as the actual "author of her life", invented a lot of the past seasons, especially the last one, and that some storylines should have been completely different. In fact, at the time of the last episode, Dan died a year ago - in season 8 - of the consequences of his heart attack. Roseanne made up Dan's affair because she felt cheated by him because he simply left her alone in the world. There was also never a lottery win. Furthermore, Jackie, not Beverly, is a lesbian, Darlene is actually married to Mark, while Becky is married to David. The last episode is in stark contrast to the series, as it throws up the storylines, and is very controversial among fans of the series to this day. When the series resumed in 2018, the events of the ninth season were simply ignored.

Worth mentioning
- In the first episode of the series with the episode title Life & Stuff, Sal Barone (Junior) mimed DJ Conner. As an 8-year-old, Sal Barone was cast and got the role of DJ Conner. However, Sal's mother took him out of the show after problems with Darlene actress Sara Gilbert. Michael Fishman took over his role until the end. Sal Barone (Junior) never appeared in a television production again.
- The originally planned title of the series was Life & Stuff .
- Roseanne Barr and Laurie Metcalf were actually pregnant while filming. Their pregnancies were built into the series.
- In the 11th episode of season 7, Roseanne's doctor mentions that she is pregnant with a girl, even though she gives birth to a boy the following season. This event is already hinted at in the 7th season, since at the end of the 11th episode the son of Jackie and Fred is shown as a girl, i.e. of the opposite sex.

Season 10
In April 2017 it was announced that a new edition with eight episodes was planned. TV newcomer Ames McNamara was supposed to play eight-year-old Mark, the son of Darlene and David. In addition to Roseanne Barr, Sara Gilbert, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Gianna, Johnny Galecki and Lecy Goranson also performed. Sarah Chalke, who alternately played Conner's eldest daughter Becky with Goranson, played a new series character in the sequel. The 90-year-old Estelle Parsons and Sandra Bernhard were also seen in the new episodes. A one-minute trailer about the new edition was shown during a commercial break at the 2018 Academy Awards . It is noteworthy that the series ignores the events of the controversial 9th season: Dan Conner is therefore still alive.
On March 27, 2018, the first of the nine episodes aired on ABC. The success exceeded all expectations. After broadcasting the first two episodes of the tenth season, ABC extended the series for another season at the end of March in view of the very good ratings. The extension was withdrawn end of May, after the lead actress Roseanne Barr is a generally considered racist Counting short message about the appearance of Valerie Jarrett , a former adviser to Barack Obama , had spread in which she had written, the politician look like the child of a Monkeys out. Barr had previously attracted attention through requests to speak in which she presented herself as a supporter of the right-wing conspiracy theory around QAnon . In addition, the fact that the series character played by Barr was drawn as a supporter of Donald J. Trump had caused a stir .
The Conners
As a result of the Barr scandal, the contracts with the other crew members were initially terminated. From the beginning of June 2018, however, the producers successfully negotiated a spin-off of the series under a new name and announced shooting for autumn 2018. The plot of the new season, which got the title The Conners , should be built around the character of Darlene Conner ; the plot should, among other things, revolve around how the family deals with the sudden death of Roseanne Conner . In the negotiations it was u. a. about compensation for Barr's copyrights to the series. The broadcast of the new series began in October 2018, with most of the actors participating again.

All nine seasons have been released on DVD, both as individual series boxes and as complete boxes.
