Washington County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Plymouth .

The county is located in eastern North Carolina, about 85 km to the north from Virginia and has an area of ​​1009 square kilometers, of which 197 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Chowan County , Perquimans County , Tyrrell County , Hyde County , Beaufort County , Martin County, and Bertie Counties .

Washington County is divided into four townships : Lees Mill, Plymouth, Scuppernong, and Skinnersville.

history

Washington County was formed in 1799 from parts of Tyrrell County. It was named after President George Washington .

The Somerset Place State Historic Site (2014) is one of ten entries of the county in the National Register of Historic Places .

Ten buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Washington County had 13,723 people in 5,367 households and 3,907 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 48.28 percent white, 48.94 percent African American, 0.05 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.66 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.27 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
