Origin and meaning

Antonius means "coming from the family of the Antonians ". In Roman antiquity he was the gentile name (family name) of a famous family. It also becomes a first name through the family members of the clan.

The name probably comes originally from ancient Greek and is said to refer mythically to an Anteon , son of Heracles / Hercules . An etymological interpretation can be derived from Άντώνιος - “worthy of prizes, inestimable, not for sale”: ( ὤνιος - “for sale, for sale” and ἀντἰ anti - “against”, in a privative meaning).
