The Asian Football Confederation ( German : Asian Football Confederation ), also AFC , is the Asian football association . It is one of the six continental associations of the world football association FIFA and comprises a total of 47 national associations from individual countries and regions. Australia has also been a member of the AFC since 2006.
The AFC was founded on May 8, 1954 in the Philippine capital Manila , when the representatives of twelve Asian football associations met for the 1954 Asian Games . The founding members of the AFC were Afghanistan , Burma , the Republic of China (Taiwan) , Hong Kong , India , Indonesia , Japan , the Republic of Korea , Pakistan , the Philippines , Singapore, and South Vietnam . The first president of the association was Man Kam-loh from Hong Kong, the general secretary Lee Wai-thong was also from Hong Kong, where the association also had its first seat. The FIFA recognized the union still on June 21 of that year.
Two years after the association was founded, the first Asian Championship took place in Hong Kong.

Israel joined the AFC in 1956 but was expelled in 1974. In 1991, Israel was accepted as a full member by UEFA after it temporarily played qualifying matches in the Oceania group . Kazakhstan joined UEFA in 2002.

- AFC U-23 Championship - Men's U-23 Asian Football Championship. Held for the first time in 2014, it also serves as a qualification for the Olympic football competition .

States in foreign continental associations
Some countries that are wholly or mostly in Asia are members of other associations. Israel , Kazakhstan , Russia , the Republic of Cyprus , Turkey and the Caucasus Republics of Armenia , Azerbaijan and Georgia are members of UEFA .
Indonesia, which is partly on the Australian continent , was a founding member of the AFC. In 2006 Australia, until then a member of the Oceanic Federation OFC , joined the AFC to increase the chance of a World Cup starting place. In the oceanic qualification the competition was weaker, but the winner of the Oceania qualification had to play against a representative of another continental federation (1966 to 1982, 1998 and 2010 Asia; 1986 Europe; 1990, 2002 and 2006 South America, 2014 North America) compete - at the 1994 World Cup even against two representatives (first North America, then South America).
