Natascha Badmann (born December 6, 1966 in Basel ) is a Swiss duathlete and triathlete . She won the Ironman Hawaii six times , twice the long-distance world championship duathlon at Powerman Zofingen (1997, 2000), was triathlon European champion (1997) and vice-world champion in triathlon (2000). She is included in the list of Swiss women triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

The course of her sporting career is rather unusual. Badmann became a mother (daughter Anastasia) at the age of 17, worked as a secretary and was overweight. In her biography, she described herself as an 'awkward, chubby, depressed child'.

The turning point in her life came in 1989 when she met the former national triathlon coach Toni Hasler , who subsequently became her partner and trainer. Hasler soon discovered Badmann's talent for endurance sports and consistently promoted her development to become a top athlete.

World champion duathlon 1995

Badmann was able to assert himself at the top of the world in the duathlon at the beginning of the 1990s . At the 1992 World Cup she was fourth, and a year later she was vice European champion. Since 1995 she started as a professional athlete. In 1995 she won the duathlon world title over the short distance. In 1996, 1997 and 2000 she won the Powerman in Zofingen, which was the Duathlon World Championship over the long distance until 1999. In 1995 and 1997 she was also European triathlon champion. In 1996 she took part in the Ironman Hawaii in Kailua-Kona for the first time and immediately reached second place, beaten only by record winner Paula Newby-Fraser .

Winner Ironman Hawaii 1998

Badmann was a semi-professional until 1997 and also worked as a social worker at the municipal administration in Trimbach . She then decided on a professional career and henceforth concentrated on the triathlon. This year Badmann was already one of the tight favorites at Ironman Hawaii, but got out of the race with stomach cramps. In 1998 she became the first European ever to win the prestigious race. As a result, she was voted Swiss Sportswoman of the Year for the first time .

2000 Summer Olympics

1999 was devoted entirely to preparation for the 2000 Olympic Games . But the Olympic distance of 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running proved too short for their abilities; Badmann could not show her strengths in cycling, was not fast enough in swimming and concentrated on the long distance (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42 km running).

In the following years Badmann dominated the long distance (silver at the ITU Triathlon World Championship 2000) and the Ironman races. From 2000 to 2002 she won the Ironman Hawaii three more times in a row and in 2002 was voted Swiss Sportswoman of the Year for the second time. In 2004 and 2005 further victories at the Ironman Hawaii followed.

Accident at the Ironman Hawaii 2007

In 2007 she was the victim of a serious accident at the Ironman Hawaii: A motorcyclist cut her way on a downhill slope, Badmann evaded and collided with a pylon at a construction site. Badmann initially continued the race with a spare bike until her coach persuaded her to give up. Later, massive and serious injuries were found on both shoulders, which seemed to make a continuation of the career impossible. Several operations followed, after months of rehab, Badmann began training again six months later, during a fitness test at the sprint triathlon in Uster a few weeks before the Ironman Hawaii 2008, she was sometimes only able to swim with one arm. At her starts at the Ironman Hawaii in 2008 and 2009, however, she broke off the race, a planned renewed comeback attempt in 2010 she canceled in advance because of a Pfeiffer glandular fever .

It wasn't until 2011 that Badmann made a comeback at the age of 44 with a second place at the Ironman Lanzarote , the first successful Ironman since her accident. In April 2012, she took her fourth win at Ironman South Africa, which was her eleventh win in an Ironman competition overall. And also made her the oldest female Ironman winner.

In 2014, Badmann was again the victim of a traffic accident on Gran Canaria in preparation for the Ironman Melbourne . Instead , she broke off a start at Ironman South Africa . At Ironman Germany (Ironman European Championship) she finished sixth in June 2014 and three weeks later at Ironman Switzerland she only had to admit defeat to Daniela Ryf . In October 2014, at her seventeenth start at Ironman Hawaii, she was thrown back by a tire failure and finished 24th. In 2015 Badmann decided not to start in Hawaii for the third time in 19 years.

She announced that she would start as a professional in Hawaii for the last time in 2016 at the age of 50. 20 years after their first start. She has been working as a speaker since 2018. In March 2019, the 52-year-old finished second at Ironman 70.3 Oman.
