history

Chapel of St. Apollonia

The name Guevenatten comes from the late Latin capanna , which means hut, therefore the coat of arms of Guevenatten contains three golden huts.

In 1413 the community was mentioned as Keuonet , in 1480 as Geffenat .

Until the Peace of Westphalia , Guevenatten belonged to the Seigneurie von Thann and to the county of Pfirt . The place was a fiefdom of the Reinach Hirtzbach family until the 17th century . On October 6, 1832, about twenty houses and their stables and barns burned down. The fire spread so quickly that the residents were unable to save their belongings. In 1865 there was a wheat mill on site.

In 1892 the existing dilapidated chapel was rebuilt and enlarged. It is dedicated to Saint Apollonia .
