The HC Bolzano (ital .: HC Bolzano ) is an Italian ice hockey team from Bolzano in South Tyrol , in the Austrian Erste Bank Hockey League play.
The club is 19-time Italian champion and thus also the Italian record champion, and the club has also won the Coppa Italia , the cup competition of the Italian league, three times . HC Bozen also won the Supercoppa Italiana three times . The greatest international successes include winning the Alpine League in the 1993/1994 season and the six-nation tournament, also known as the European League Cup, in 1994.
HC Bozen plays its home games in the multi-purpose hall " Eiswelle " (Italian: Palaonda), which can hold 7,200 spectators , and the women's ice hockey club HC Eagles Bozen is also at home in the Eiswelle.
history
HC Bozen was founded in 1933 and for the first twenty years played its home games on a natural ice rink near the Bolzano train station. It was not until 1953 that the club moved to the Bolzano exhibition center, making artificial ice available for the first time. Eleven of the total of nineteen Italian championship titles were won there before the team moved into the ice wave newly built for the Group A ice hockey world championship in 1994. At the same time, the team also took part in the Alpine League , an international ice hockey competition in which teams from Slovenia and Austria were also involved. In addition to one championship and three runner-up titles in this competition, the team was also able to win seven other Italian titles, the last of which in 2012. In addition, they won the Coppa Italia , the cup competition of the Italian league, three times . Further successes were three wins in the Supercoppa Italiana and the six-nation tournament , also known as the European League Cup, in 1994.
In 2013, HC Bozen applied for admission to the Austrian Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL) after previous applications had failed again and again due to the resistance of the Italian ice hockey association. However, the chaotic conditions in Italian ice hockey paved the way for the club to participate, as a large part of the clubs from the second division had recently been approved for participation in the also supranational Inter-National League .
To participate in the EBEL, a completely new team was put together under the leadership of sports director Dieter Knoll and head coach Tom Pokel in order to be competitive in the EBEL, which is stronger than the Italian league. When planning the squad, some so-called Italian-Canadians were also taken into account, i.e. Canadian players with Italian roots. In the EBEL, HC Bozen appeared in its first season as HCB Südtirol . Bolzano only managed to put a squad on the ice at the last moment. The budget of the Weißroten was a quarter or even a fifth of that of the top Austrian clubs. It was generally expected that the HCB Südtirol would end up in the lower half of the table. But then the team sensationally secured the championship title in the first year (victory in overtime in the decisive fifth match in Salzburg). This is the first time a team that is not based in Austria has won the championship. In the following four seasons, too, HCB Südtirol always reached at least the quarter-finals. In the 2017/18 season even the second title was won after being in last place for a long time in the regular season and only qualifying for the playoffs in the last game of the intermediate round. The champions of this success were the Finn Kai Suikkanen , who took over as coach from December, and his compatriot Pekka Tuokkola , who also joined the Füchsen this season to guard their goal.
The number of spectators in the local ice wave increased constantly; Most recently, the average in the regular season was over 3,000 - a more than remarkable result by Italian standards.
The main sponsor of the club has been the Interspar supermarket chain and the Forst brewery for many years, and Alperia AG has been the new main sponsor since the 2015/2016 season .
In addition to the combat team, the club also operates various youth teams. Contrary to the regulations in force in the EBEL, however, no team takes part in the Erste Bank Young Stars League and the Erste Bank Juniors League .

Venue
Home of the club is the multi-purpose hall called Eiswelle (Italian: Palaonda) built in 1994 in the Bolzano industrial zone . It holds a total of 7,200 spectators. In addition to HC Bozen, the women's ice hockey club HC Eagles Bozen is also based there.
The name of the building comes from the unmistakable shape of the roof structure. In order to take part in the EBEL, HC Bolzano was given various conditions that made a minor modernization necessary (lighting conditions for TV broadcasts, etc.).
