Kai (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kai (but also Kaj , Kay or Cay ) is a mostly male, rarely a female given name .

Distribution and importance

The use as a male first name is much more common in northern Germany than south of the Main Line . According to most name researchers, the name Kai comes from the old Frisian word kempe and means “fighter” or “warrior” (cf. also nhd. Kämpe ). According to a competing interpretation, it is a Frisian short form of the names Nikolaus , Gaius / Caius / Kajus , Kornelius or Gerhard , without any reliable knowledge being available. Likewise, Kai could be derived from the Latin name Cajetanus ("one from the city of Gaeta "; cf. Kajetan von Thiene ). According to another assumption, Kai comes from a Celtic name meaning "spear bearer, javelin thrower, spear holder".

In addition, there are roughly identical names with different meanings in Hawaiian and Polynesian ("sea, ocean"), in Navaho Indian ("willow tree"), in Japanese ("trailblazer, pioneer") and in Chinese Mandarin ("victorious") and in Persian (see e.g. Kai Chosrau , Kai Kawus ... ).

As a female first name, Kai, Kaj or Kaia, Kaja is either the Nordic short form of Katharina (from Gr. Aikaterínē , Αικατερίνη, folk etymologically interpreted as "the pure") or is derived from the Latin name Cajetana ("one from the city of Gaeta ") . In other languages, it can also be a short form of the name Kylie .

The name- Kai is on 22 April, the anniversary of the holy Kajus celebrated.

Court order

On April 29, 2004, the Hamm Higher Regional Court (Az. 15 W 102/03) ruled that parents can give their son the first name “Kai” as the only first name. Up until this decision, it was necessary in some regions in Germany to add a second first name clearly defining the gender when naming “Kai” (e.g. Kai Alexander, Kai-Uwe). The reason given in the decision was that the name "Kai" was mainly used as a first name for boys in Germany, while it was rarely used as a female first name there.
