Martin County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Williamston , which was named after William Williams , a colonel in the American Revolutionary War .

The county is located in east-central North Carolina, about 50 miles to the north from Virginia , and has an area of ​​1,195 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Bertie County , Washington County , Beaufort County , Pitt County , Edgecombe County, and Halifax County .

Martin County is divided into 10 townships : Bear Grass, Cross Roads, Goose Nest, Griffins, Hamilton, Jamesville, Poplar Point, Robersonville, Williams and Williamston.

history

Martin County was formed on March 2, 1774 from parts of Halifax County and Tyrrell County. It was named after Josiah Martin , the last British royal governor of North Carolina. The county was later named after Founding Father and Governor Alexander Martin .

A total of 27 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 4, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Martin County had 25,593 people in 10,020 households and 7,194 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 52.54 percent white, 45.37 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.06 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,793, and the median income for a family is $ 35,428. Males had a median income of $ 29,818 versus $ 19,167 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,102. 20.2 percent of the population and 16.3 percent of families are below the poverty line. 27.5 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 25.7 percent are 65 years of age or older.
