The Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas ( Latin : Pontificia Studiorum Universitas a Sancto Thoma Aquinate in Urbe , Italian : Pontificia Università San Tommaso d'Aquino (PUST)) - also called Angelicum - is a papal university named after Thomas Aquinas in Rome . It is led by members of the Dominican Order ; Most of the professors also belong to this order.
history
The Angelicum has its roots in the medieval " studium generale " of the Dominicans around 1222 in the monastery of Santa Sabina in Rome. In 1265 the course was founded under the direction of Thomas Aquinas: “Fr. Thome de Aquino iniungimus in remissionem peccatorum quod teneat studium Rome, et volumus quod fratribus qui stant secum ad studendum provideatur in necessariis vestimentis a conventibus de quorum predicatione traxerunt originem. Si autem illi studentes inventi fuerint negligentes in studio, damus potestatem fr. Thome quod ad conventus suos possit eos remittere ”
Until 1909, it was operated by Pope Gregory XIII in 1577 . confirmed institute as Collegium Divi Thomae . Pope Benedict XIII From 1727 onwards, it also allowed non-religious students access.
Since 1932 the university has been housed in the former monastery of Santi Domenico e Sisto on the Quirinal.
The university teaches theology, church law, philosophy and social sciences in the Thomas sense. At the Angelicum studied a. a. Karol Wojtyla, who later became Pope John Paul II , who did a doctorate at the Angelicum from 1947.
The Collegio Alberoni in Piacenza is affiliated with the Angelicum .

The academic community at Angelicum consists of 150 teachers (from 30 different countries) and 1,400 students (from 98 different countries). The Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas has four faculties:
