The FK Rostov ( Russian Футбольный клуб Ростов , scientific transliteration : FK Rostov ) is a Russian football club from the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don . The club won the Russian Football Cup in 2014 and became Russian runner-up in 2016 .

history

Soviet Union

The association was founded in May 1930 and was named Traktor Rostov until 1953 . In 1950 the team first took part in the league operations of the Russian SFSR . In the course of the league reform, the team was renamed Torpedo in 1953 and then played in Group B of the Soviet championship. Four years later, the club name was changed again, this time in Rostselmasch , after the main sponsor and the largest agricultural machinery manufacturer in Russia and Eastern Europe, Rostselmasch . 1964 Rostov reached the first place in one of the zone championships of Group B, beat Terek Grozny in the play-off match and rose to the second highest Soviet league , where the team stayed until 1969. Between 1970 and 1974 Rostov did not take part in the game and only played in a few regional tournaments. It was not until 1975 that the team resumed league operations and, after renewed reforms, started in the third-highest division . In 1985, after 10 years, the club achieved the long-awaited goal of playing in the second division again. There was now a sizable stadium and its own sports school, from which young players moved to the first team. In that season Rostselmasch managed 26 games without defeat. In the second division, the team played the tried and tested offensive football and scored 86 goals in the first season - most of the league - and finished in seventh place in the table. Until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the team played in the second highest Soviet league.

Russia

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , there was the new Russian Supreme League from 1992 , in which the Rostov team was included and where it was able to reach eighth place in the table in the first season . The second season was not very successful for the club, as many good players moved abroad and others were injured, so that at the end of the season they had to go to the second division . Against all expectations, the club prevailed against big competition such as Zenit Saint Petersburg and Sokol Saratow and managed to get back up immediately. In the 1998 season , Rostov reached sixth place in the table and the associated entitlement to participate in the UEFA Intertoto Cup 1999, the greatest success in the club's history. After FK Cementarnica 55 Skopje and NK Varteks Varaždin were defeated first, FK Rostselmasch made it to the semi-finals of the European competition. There the club met one of the largest and most famous European football clubs: Juventus Turin . A year later, the club again reached the "Straw Cup" 2000 and was eliminated in the third round against the French representative AJ Auxerre . From 2002 to 2005 the Greek-Russian entrepreneur Ivan Savvidis was president of the association. In 2003, the club reached the final of the Russian Cup, but it was lost on June 15 in the capital's Lokomotiv Stadium with 0-1 to Spartak Moscow . This season the last name change so far was carried out in FK Rostov .

2007 was a particularly unsuccessful year for Rostov. Only two victories this season and the last place in the table let the club relegate back to the second division after 14 years . After only one season in the second division, the team made it back to the Premjer league in 2008 . In the 2012/13 season , the club saved itself to 13th place in the table (relegation place). In the relegation Rostov met fourth-placed second division SKA-Energija Khabarovsk and secured relegation with two wins.

The first major success in the club's history was achieved in the 2013/14 season when Rostov won the Russian Football Cup thanks to a 6-5 success on penalties against FK Krasnodar . Originally, Rostov should have been allowed to participate in the play-off games of the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League , but did not receive the necessary license and should be replaced by Spartak Moscow . The appeal of FK Rostov against this decision at the International Sports Court was granted. So he took part in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League , where he was eliminated, however, against the Turkish representative Trabzonspor after 2-0 and 0-0 in the play-off round.

On December 18, 2014, Gurban Berdiýew was hired as the new head coach. With Berdiýew, the club, which was at the bottom of the table at the time, was able to save itself to 14th place in the table (relegation place) in the 2014/15 season . In the relegation Rostov met FK Tosno and secured relegation with two wins. In the Premjer-Liga 2015/16 the team fought for the championship in the domestic league until the last matchday, but had to let CSKA Moscow pass. With this second place in the table, FK Rostow took part in the qualification for the UEFA Champions League 2016/17 , met RSC Anderlecht in the third qualifying round and made it into the play-offs after two games (2: 2 and 2: 0) Round. On August 6, 2016, after the success against Anderlecht and after only one game in the 2016/17 season , Gurban Berdiýew resigned as head coach. His successor was the previous assistant coach Dmitri Kiritschenko . In the play-off round of qualifying for the Champions League, a 1-1 draw was first fought against Ajax Amsterdam . Then the Dutch team was defeated 4-1 in the home stadium. As a result, FK Rostov qualified for the group stage of the Champions League for the first time. With FC Bayern Munich , Atlético Madrid and PSV Eindhoven , Rostov completed Group D of the competition. On the fifth matchday, a 3-2 win in the home stadium against FC Bayern Munich was surprisingly the first victory in a Champions League group stage. Ultimately, Rostov was third in the table and thus qualified for the sixteenth finals of the Europa League , where they met Sparta Prague . Rostov won 4-0 in their home stadium and scored 1-1 in the Czech capital. In the round of 16 they met Manchester United and were eliminated after 1-1 on home soil and 0-1 away.

On December 19, 2017, Valeri Karpin was introduced as the new head coach.

FK Rostov played its home games in the 15,840-seat Olimp-2 stadium , which opened in 1930. At the beginning of the 2000s, it was redesigned into a pure football stadium without an athletics facility . For the 2018 FIFA World Cup has been Rostov arena built with 45,145 seats. It is the club's new venue. After the World Cup tournament, the number of seats available for FK Rostov games will be reduced to 37,885.
