The Ski Jumping World Cup 1979/80 (official name: FIS World Cup Ski Jumping 1979/80 ) was held for the first time and was organized by the FIS World Ski Association between December 27, 1979 and March 25, 1980 at 18 different locations in Europe, North America and Asia organized series of competitions in ski jumping . It consisted of 25 individual competitions. The introduction of a ski jumping World Cup was decided at the 32nd FIS Congress (May 18-19, 1979 in Nice ).

The prelude
At the start of this new format there was a triple victory for the ÖSV -Adler , followed by the Swiss Hansjörg Sumi and the Japanese Hirokazu Yagi - but due to the lack of jumpers from Norway, Finland, Poland, the USSR and the GDR, they had about 15 of the Missing the best in the world.

World Cup points were awarded for places 1 to 15 (1st place = 25 points, 2nd place = 20 points, 3rd place = 15 points, from 4th to 15th place, 12 points to 1 point, descending). In the case of athletes who were in the points in more than 12 competitions, results were discarded, since in this case only the twelve best results were counted. There was a special feature in the three competitions in Switzerland (St. Moritz, Gstaad, Engelberg): in the case of athletes who achieved the points in all three competitions in Switzerland, the worst placement was treated as a discarded result.
For the nation ranking, all points were taken into account (no deletion results).
