history
Stadecken-Elsheim is a municipality that emerged on June 7, 1969 from the previously independent municipalities of Stadecken and Elsheim. The newly created double community was to be given the art name "Sonnenberg". However, this proposal was rejected. In the first place of the double name is Stadecken because of its size.
Due to the former independence of the districts, there is no common history of a municipality Stadecken-Elsheim. The histories of the two districts must first be viewed separately.
History of Stadecken
The district of Stadecken takes its name , which is unusual for the region, from the Stadeck moated castle , which was first mentioned in 1276 as "Eckburg am Gestade". The castle with the surrounding hamlet was an important administrative center for centuries and a lordly domain business with viticulture that was of great importance for the surrounding villages.
The powerful dynasty of the County of Katzenelnbogen , who also ruled Darmstadt, St. Goar and parts of the Taunus, succeeded in gaining a foothold in the Gau in the 13th century by acting as bailiffs in 1289 for the secular protection of those belonging to the St. Andres monastery in Cologne three parish churches Hedesheim, Engelstadt and Ockenheim took over. In 1291, Count Eberhart built Stadeck Castle as a moated castle on the territory of Hedesheim to protect this area. Soon afterwards he settled the inhabitants under the protection of his castle and in 1301 received city rights for his castle hamlet from the Roman-German King Albrecht I. Hedesheim, the old village from the 7th century, was orphaned and is only present today through the Stadeck field name "Im Altdorf". Although the Count von Kaltzenelnbogen's efforts to enlarge the Burgweiler "Stadeck" could not be put into practice, his castle remained an important barrier against the further advance of Kurmainz and became an important base for securing his domestic power. In 1468, before his family Stadeck died out , Count Phillip von Katzenelnbogen gave his granddaughter Ottilie as a dowry when she married Margrave Christoph I of Baden, so that it would later serve as the Margravine's widow's residence.
In 1507 the Baden dynasty sold the Stadeck rule to the Knights of Quad- Wickrath. This interim period only lasted until 1564. In that year Wolfgang von Zweibrücken bought the office, castle and village of Stadeck for 32,000 guilders. The count palatine had the newly formed office, which consisted of Stadeck, Essenheim and large property in the Elsheim corridor, administered by officials who lived with the pastor, the teacher and four servants at Stadeck Castle. In the time in Zweibrücken, Stadeck Castle can be seen as a fortified district administration and tax office. The village had at that time about 350 inhabitants, which together with the food Heimern to compulsory labor were required. During this time the village community had self-government under the mayor and under the five councilors. They formed the Stadeck court. In April 1632, fighting between Spaniards and Swedes destroyed the castle and most of the village. During the great devastation of the Palatinate, Stadecken suffered damage again.
In 1733, the Stadeck Office (Stadecken and Essenheim) fell to the Electoral Palatinate for the regulation of inheritance. It came to the Oberamt Oppenheim . The lordly officials at that time were provided by the Hecht family from Kreuznach. In the French period from 1797 to 1814, Stadecken belonged to the Donnersberg department and the canton of Niederolm . The prefect of the Jeanbon St. André department even bought a summer residence on the Mainzer Berg , the Windhäuser Hof, in 1802 . In 1816 the office and village came to the Grand Duchy of Hesse . In 1828 the Windhäuser Hof became the property of Friedrich Theodor Langen .
Stadecken also played a special role during the time of National Socialism . The local branch of the NSDAP , which had already been established in early April 1929 by the wine merchant Moritz Cramer in the rural community of Stadecken, was the central fixed point for the expansion of the party in the northern part of the Rheinhessen region. This even went so far that it was considered was to rename the place in Hitlerhausen . For this purpose, postcards with the inscription "Greetings from Hitlerhausen (currently still called Stadecken)" were made. On the map you could see the part of the village over which a sun with a swastika rises.
History Elsheim
Elsheim has a no less traditional past. Similar to Hedesheim , the “precursor settlement” of Stadecken, the beginnings go back to the time of the Franks. Elsheim was first mentioned in 1144 as "Ilgesheim". Unlike Stadecken, Elsheim belonged to the free imperial villages of the Ingelheimer Grund for centuries. This had been pledged to the Count Palatine since 1375 and was finally given to him as an imperial pledge in 1407, which it remained until the end of the 18th century. The citizens of Elsheim had the same rights and obligations as the citizens of the free imperial cities, thanks to their belonging to the Reich territory. Elsheim, too, suffered great destruction in the Thirty Years War, but remained in place despite the subsequent years of famine. Better times brought economic life into motion, the road network was expanded, which is still indicated by the "honorary pillar" today.

Economy and Infrastructure
Viticulture
Due to the high quality soil and the mild climate in the Rhine Valley, viticulture can look back on a long tradition here. The community is therefore characterized by viticulture and today with its vineyards Stadecker Spitzberg , Stadecker Lenchen , Elsheimer Blume and Elsheimer Bockstein am Mainzer Berg one of the largest wine-growing communities in Rheinhessen. The typical grape variety is the Silvaner , but Müller-Thurgau , Riesling , Portuguese and increasingly various Burgundy varieties are also grown on a larger scale. Most of the quality wines made here are marketed by the local winemakers themselves. Especially in autumn, when the grapes are picked , numerous ostrich taverns also invite you to visit.
Around Stadecken-Elsheim there are some vineyard houses, such as the historic, listed Trullo to the north and the Hiebergturm northeast of the village, which is also accessible as a lookout tower . The 3 km long Adam-Elsheimer-Weg leads past both of them, a circular hiking trail through the vineyards dedicated to the famous German baroque painter Adam Elsheimer, who has his roots in Elsheim. To the south of Stadecken-Elsheim is the Stadecker Warte, which can be seen from afar.
traffic
The community is five kilometers away from the federal motorway 63 at the intersection of the state roads 413, 426 and 428. Stadecken-Elsheim is in the area of the Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrsverbund (RNN) and is served by the buses of Omnibusverkehr Rhein-Nahe GmbH (ORN) , which represent the public transport connection with the Rheinhessen area and with Mainz, as well as establish a connection to the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV).
