Luftenberg an der Donau is a market town in Upper Austria in the Mühlviertel in the Perg district with 4279 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The municipality belongs to the judicial district of Perg with the responsible district court in Perg .

The town center at 295  m above sea level. A. is located approximately 13 kilometers southeast of the center of the state capital Linz . The municipal area extends to areas north and south of the Danube .

Grave finds, the existence of old cult sites, a Celtic hill fort, etc. a. refer to the settlement of the strategically favorable location due to its location on the Danube and the mouth of the Traun as early as the Bronze Age .

The first documentary mention of Luftenberg took place around the year 900, while Abhaben was mentioned for the first time in 1208. In the Middle Ages, Luftenberg was the location of the fortress Luftenberg , while the Hofmark Abhaben with the Danube port and Ladstadt belonged to the Donauveste Spielberg . In addition to the salt trade, mining in quarries was an important economic factor.

In terms of development history, there is a close connection with the market town of St. Georgen an der Gusen , which is still expressed today in parish membership. A stronger independence of the community of Luftenberg was only accelerated by the strong population growth in the second half of the 20th century and realized by the creation of its own schools and kindergartens as well as the creation of its own infrastructure and the occasional settlement of companies. A large part of the working population commutes to jobs in industrial and service companies in Linz.

Since August 14, 1937, the municipality of Pürach, which was previously an independent municipality, has been part of the municipality of Luftenberg as a result of a voluntary merger. The Luftenberg market survey took place on February 8, 2010. Due to its location on the Danube and Traun Cycle Paths as well as the Donausteig and the Jakobsweg Austria , tourism also represents an economic potential.

geology

From a geological point of view, the Luftenberg is the southernmost branch of the Bohemian Forest , which is part of the Bohemian Massif . From a geological and geomorphological point of view as well as from the point of view of the use of space, the municipality of Luftenberg belongs to three of the 41 spatial units of the federal state of Upper Austria . The majority of the community area is in the southern Mühlviertel region . In the north, the Central Mühlviertler Hochland spatial unit extends to the municipality. The areas on the level on the Danube, on the Ausee and in the area of Abwind also north of the Danube are part of the Linzer Feld spatial unit .

On the south-facing slopes of Luftenberg there are the remains of abandoned quarries , which, in addition to the granite that was still mined in the first half of the 20th century, also led to pegmatites such as apatite , beryl , smoky quartz , albite , microline and smaller garnets . In Luftenberg, the extremely rare beryllium phosphate herderite could be detected for the first time in glassy, yellowish parts in the pegmatite. Mining and a smelter on the Luftenberg are also handed down from historical times . A few centuries ago, fertile loess and a suitable climate were the basis for viticulture in this area.

The sand deposits that are industrially mined are still of economic importance. They were deposited by the Tertiary Sea around 30 million years ago.

Districts of the municipality and their waters

The Danube divides the municipality into a northern part (left partial view without localities) and a southern part (right with Ausee)

The area, which is not assigned to any of the villages of Luftenberg, can only be reached from Luftenberg on foot or by single-lane vehicles via the Abzüge-Asten power station. General access is via Asten .

In the municipality of Luftenberg there are no significant rivers besides the Danube and smaller channels, as the Gusen only touches the municipality in the east of the village of Abhaben. The development of the number of inhabitants was very different in the individual districts: The development of the settlement areas in Abhaben has quadrupled the number of inhabitants since 1869 and has merged with the settlement areas of the neighboring municipality of St. Georgen an der Gusen. The population growth was even stronger in Luftenberg, where the population has increased almost sixfold since 1869. In contrast, the population stagnated in Pürach (1869: 127; 2001: 138) and in Steining (1869: 96; 2001: 107).

Special geographical location

Parts of what is now the municipality of Luftenberg were already settled in the Bronze Age, the reason being assumed to be the convenient accessibility via the Traun , Enns and Danube rivers . Grave finds from the Bronze Age, a bronze depot from the Urnfield Age from 1890 and an approximately 8.8 hectare Celtic hill fort on the Luftenberg with a cult site are evidence of its prehistoric importance.

Luftenberg is located directly opposite the confluence of the Traun and the Danube. In the Middle Ages, the village of Raffelstetten , which is directly adjacent to Luftenberg , had an important shipping area (cf. the Raffelstetten customs regulations from 906). Even at the time of the Hungarian invasions a few decades later, the Luftenberg had a strategically important function, because the then imperial border at the level of the Traun was withdrawn and the fortress Luftenberg offered itself as a defensive post.

The region was already significant for the salt trade in antiquity and the early Middle Ages . It is known that mule tracks also led north via Luftenberg. Until the end of the 19th century , a salt cellar remained in the Steining district , which only disappeared when the Linz - Budweis railway line was built . The owner of the salt cellar in question still had the right to sell the so-called small salt around 1600 .

The location of the municipality both north and south of the Danube is historical. Before regulation in the 19th century, the Danube had numerous arms and islands and could easily be crossed via fords. The truce of Veste Luftenberg extended to Raffelstetten and the Schwaighofer tavern , which belongs to Luftenberg, was still a reloading point around 1600 for goods brought in by salt barges on the Traun for onward transport by large ships on the Danube.

After the Danube regulation, the land was difficult to access for the local farmers , which is why they sold them to the Hohenlohische Forstverwaltung. The descendants initially operated forestry and, after the power plant was built, mined gravel. Since the end of the 1970s, the Ausee that was created there has been a local recreation area.

The district of Steining was located directly on the northern main channel of the Danube until the Danube was regulated, and the district of Abhaben was only separated from the immediate bank zone of the Danube by the construction of the Danube power plant Abzüge-Asten in the 1970s.

Up until the 18th century, the four quarters of the Archduchy of Austria over the Enns met at Luftenberg ( Hausruckviertel , Traunviertel , Mühlviertel and Machlandviertel ). Luftenberg is halfway between the historically significant cities of Linz and Enns . North of the Danube, Hauderer Strasse (Comercialstrasse) ran through Luftenberg from Linz to Lower Austria since the beginning of the 16th century .

St. Emmeram, Niedernburg and St. Florian

In the early Middle Ages, the area around the Luftenberg was still in the area of influence of the imperial city of Regensburg , although place names such as Statzing (Starz = end or turning point) or Abzüge (Ach-Wenden = bend of the water) indicate an originally Slavic settlement of the area. The name Luftenberg could also be of Slavic origin and mean something like Lug ins Land .

Luftenberg was first mentioned around 900 as Luffinperc in connection with a noble named Durinc in a deed of donation from the St. Emmeram monastery in Regensburg. In 1111 Bishop Ulrich I of Passau finally confirmed the tithe of Luffinberch to the St. Florian monastery . Luftenberg is one of the few places in today's Mühlviertel that was already mentioned 1000 years ago.

The district Abhaben originally belonged as the Bavarian Hofmark , as the Danube port and Ladstatt since the time of Emperor Heinrich II. To the abbey of Niedernburg near Passau , which was then imperial and was first mentioned in 1208. This Hofmark Abzüge was closely related to the nearby Donauveste Spielberg , with the duke exercising the bailiwick over the monastery property. The Bailiwick to downdrafts was Duke finally in 1293 Albrecht I of Ulrich I of chapels pledged and subsequently the princely rule Klingenberg incorporated.

Lordship and Castle Luftenberg

Only the northern part of the local community and later cadastral community of Luftenberg originally belonged to the local rule of Luftenberg, whose castle was first mentioned in 1125. For the castle-like expansion of the Meierhof at the end of the 16th century, the material from the partially demolished old castle was used.

Living and recreational community Luftenberg on the Danube

On August 14, 1937, the current municipal area was created through a voluntary amalgamation of the previously independent municipalities of Luftenberg and Pürach.

The second half of the 20th century was characterized by strong population growth in the community of Luftenberg, as numerous employees of Linz's industrial and service companies settled in Luftenberg due to its proximity. Associated with this was a change in the social structures in the community, which was expressed in particular in the extensive detachment from the nearby St. Georgen an der Gusen market .

In the years 1969-1976 an elementary and secondary school was built in Luftenberg and in 1981 a first kindergarten was established. In 1995, instead of the previous kindergarten in the Statzing district, a larger kindergarten building was built. Luftenberg also became an independent medical community. The affiliation to the parish, the post office and the St. Georgen police station was retained. Strangely enough, the St. Georgen / Gusen station is located in the municipality of Luftenberg.

Since October 1978, Luftenberg, as a shipping police station , has also housed the Abzüge river and lock supervision , which emerged from the former Mauthausen river and port supervision through the construction of the Abhaben-Asten power plant on the Danube .

To shorten the travel times for ambulances, which until then had to be fetched either from Perg or Linz, a local office of the Austrian Green Cross was established in Luftenberg in 1967 . Since 1968 there has also been a local Red Cross office in the neighboring town of St. Georgen / Gusen.

Luftenberg was raised to the market on February 8, 2010.
