action

Many millennia ago, the dark elves under their leader Malekith tried to plunge the entire universe from Svartalfheim back into the darkness before creation with the aid of aether and an astronomical phenomenon, the so-called convergence of the nine worlds. However, the sir under their King Bor, father of Odin , managed to thwart the plan at the last moment by stealing the ether and locking it in a stone pillar. Malekith sacrificed most of his people to secure his escape and withdrew with his spaceship into the vastness of space to wait in deep sleep for the liberation of the ether.

Thousands of years later, Thor fights his way from battlefield to battlefield in the Nine Worlds to bring the chaos that his adoptive brother Loki has started with his attack on Earth back under control. However, his heart still rests with his earthly lover, Jane Foster , and he has become a little wavering in his determination to succeed his father on the throne. Loki, on the other hand, was sentenced to perpetual imprisonment in Asgard's dungeon after his capture on earth by Odin . While Loki is still guided by the jealousy and revenge on Thor and Odin, only his adoptive mother Frigga , who is still fond of him , keeps the hope high that he will get better after all.

Meanwhile on Earth, after two years of waiting in vain for Thor, Jane Foster tries to get on with her life. Darcy Lewis, her former intern and now full-time assistant, draws her attention to a strange phenomenon in an abandoned factory in the heart of London : caused by a renewed convergence of the Nine Worlds, objects are suddenly teleported away in certain places and the laws of nature are turned upside down. When Jane roams alone through the building, she is drawn into the hiding place of the ether through a portal that opens up in front of her and accidentally absorbs this power. The Asgardian guard Heimdall notices her disappearance and reports it to Thor, who is traveling to earth via the Bifröst . As soon as he arrives, he witnesses how Jane, who has meanwhile returned, accidentally uses the force of ether to fend off some police officers who want to arrest her for unauthorized entry into the factory. To protect her and to get on the trail of the phenomenon, he takes Jane with him to Asgard. There only Odin, who is not pleased by Jane's presence, can provide information about the nature and origin of the ether.

With the liberation of the aether, the dark elves are awakened from their deep sleep. Malekith smuggles his deputy Algrim as a Kursed, an elite warrior of the Dark Elves, into the dungeon of Asgard in order to sabotage the defenses of the Golden Empire from within, while Malekith and his people attack the royal castle with their invisible ship to get Jane . The surprise succeeds and Malekith penetrates into Frigga's room, which Jane is supposed to protect. When Frigga refuses to surrender Jane and the Aether, she is murdered by Algrim; Thor arrives too late and can just half burn Malekith's face with his lightning before the dark elves can escape.

Blinded by the pain of the loss of his wife, Odin arrests Jane and tries to lure Malekith over to fight him one last duel. Thor, who is more aware of the hopelessness and the possible victims of this plan, comes up with the plan to get Jane out of Asgard, to shift the fight to neutral territory and at the moment when Malekith wants to get the ether from Jane, the ominous substance to destroy. Since Odin has forbidden the use of the Bifröst, Thor is forced to enlist the help of Loki because he is the only one who knows some hidden paths that lead out of Asgard. With the help of his loyal friends Sif , Fandral and Volstagg, he frees Loki from prison and secures his support by appealing to his relationship with Frigga. Together they set a trap for Malekith, but the ether turns out to be more resilient than expected, and Malekith can absorb its substance and power. When Thor and Loki make one last attempt to stop him, Loki is mortally wounded by Algrim before killing him with one of his own implosion grenades. Thor and Jane then seek refuge from a sandstorm in a cave and accidentally find a portal that brings them back to London.

Meanwhile, Darcy and their own intern, Ian, have to figure out that you, Erik Selvig, after his mental enslavement by Loki seemingly the mind has lost a mentor and after a sensational performance at Stonehenge into the madhouse was admitted. In reality, through the mental connection with Loki, Selvig was informed of the impending convergence and hastily constructed devices to detect and combat the effects of the convergence. After Selvig was freed from official custody by Darcy and Ian, Thor and Jane join them again. Together they can determine the point of intersection of convergence. Malekith would have to stay here in order to cover all nine worlds with darkness most effectively with the power of the ether. At the destination, the University of Greenwich , Thor faces the ruler of the dark elves to fight, which is made more difficult by the approaching zenith of convergence, which completely randomly creates further gates between the nine worlds and then disappears again. In the end, after a tough battle, Thor manages to fatally wound Malekith with Selvig's constructions and to drive him into his spaceship, which is then transferred back to Svartalfheim and collapses there.

After his experiences Thor returns briefly to Asgard, where he tells Odin that he can only fulfill his tasks of protecting the Nine Worlds as a warrior and not as a king, and thus renounces the throne. As he moves away, he escapes the fact that he has spoken to Loki in Odin's form, who has again only faked his death and in the meantime has taken the place of his adoptive father.

After the end of the film, Sif and Volstagg entrust the ether to the collector , an elder of the universe, for safekeeping. When they move away, he mumbles: “One there, five are still missing.” In the post-credit scene , Jane is sitting at the breakfast table, depressed, when thunder can be heard, Thor lands on the terrace and comes back to her.

Important figures

Thor ( Chris Hemsworth ): Thor Odinson is the prince and future king of Asgard . Because of his arrogance and impulsive nature, he was exiled to earth by his father Odin. What he experienced there taught him humility, but also led to a serious conflict with his adoptive brother Loki. After he and the Avengers saved the earth from Loki's plans for conquest, he is now confronted with a new opponent - an enemy who threatens to destroy everything that is important to Thor.

Jane Foster ( Natalie Portman ): Jane Foster is an astrophysicist and met Thor when he was exiled to earth by his father. Although they only spent a short time together, the strong attraction between the two was obvious. Through Jane, Thor learned the value of humility and how heroic it can be to show humanity. After his first visit to earth and the subsequent separation, Jane lived her life ... until she is drawn back into Thor's world by an ancient force of evil.

Loki ( Tom Hiddleston ): Loki Laufeyson is Thor's adoptive brother and the son of Laufey, the king of the frost giants of Jotunheim. Together they were raised by Odin. After learning the truth about his parentage, Loki attempted to subjugate Asgard and the Earth - but was stopped in time by Thor and the Avengers. Unchanged arrogant and showing no trace of remorse, Loki is now sitting in the dungeons of Asgard. Only his mother Frigga has not given up hope that he could change. When an enemy from ancient times tries to destroy Asgard, Loki's loyalty is put to the test. Loki helps Thor stave off the threat, but is killed by courses. At the end of the film it turns out that Loki survived and pretends to be Odin. He allows Thor to live on earth to find happiness with Jane.

Dr. Erik Selvig ( Stellan Skarsgård ): Dr. Erik Selvig is an astrophysicist like Jane Foster and mentor the young scientist. Together they saw how Thor came to earth. Later, when Loki was preparing to invade Earth, he forced Selvig to help him and took possession of his mind and body. Selvig regained control of himself after Thor and the Avengers defeated Loki - but Loki's mental manipulation has steadily worsened his mental state since then. If two worlds collide now, Selvig is once again at the center of huge cosmic events.

Heimdall ( Idris Elba ): Heimdall is the gate and portal guardian of Asgard. He can perceive and see events that take place in distant galaxies. At his post in the Asgard observatory, he watches over the cosmos and protects Asgard from all attackers and intruders. Heimdall is one of Odin's most loyal warriors and in the performance of his duties without blame or blame. But now Asgard is confronted with an enemy that not even Heimdall sees coming.

Malekith ( Christopher Eccleston ): Malekith is the cruel leader of the dark elves - a people who are said to be older than the universe. Born into a world of darkness, Malekith led his people into a war against Asgard thousands of years ago - and everyone believed the dark elves had been destroyed in the process. But Malekith survived and is now trying to transform the universe and plunge it back into eternal darkness.

Algrim / Courses ( Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje ): Algrim is Malekith's reliable and loyal deputy. Thousands of years ago he fought side by side against Asgard's warriors, but now there is little time left for either of them. Hence, Algrim has to make a great sacrifice and is turned into the monstrous warrior courses. Using his new fearsome powers, Course attempts to destroy Thor and Asgard in preparation for Malekith's arrival. He goes to Asgard's dungeon with other prisoners and starts a riot. Many sir are killed in the process.

Darcy Lewis ( Kat Dennings ): Darcy Lewis is Jane Foster's quirky but quick-witted assistant - a trained political scientist who witnessed humanity's first contact with an alien civilization. Even if she does not always understand everything that is going on around her, she never hesitates to speak plainly and comment on everything. When Jane discovers that a cosmological event from ancient times is having an impact on the earth and then disappears without a trace, Darcy has to step in and replace Jane.

Volstagg ( Ray Stevenson ): Volstagg is one of the "Three Warriors", the association of the greatest and most loyal warriors of Asgard. Volstagg is impressive in size and shape - and his ax dexterity is only matched by his appetite. In many of the adventures he had in worlds scattered across the cosmos, Volstagg fought side by side with Thor, Fandral and Hogun. And although the stories of his heroic deeds are often over-embellished, Volstagg is a great hero to the people of Asgard.

Fandral ( Zachary Levi ): Fandral is Asgard's best swordsman, which only benefits him as a member of the "Three Warriors". With Volstagg and Hogun, Fandral fights side by side to protect Asgard from all enemies. When he's not crushing his enemies with his sword, Fandral uses his charm and good looks to woo the women.

Hogun ( Tadanobu Asano ): Hogun, often also known under the name "Hogun, the Grim", is the deadliest of the "Three Warriors". Armed with a morning star and sword, he protects Asgard and his peaceful home planet Wanenheim. Although he rarely speaks, his loyalty to Thor is legendary - as is his disapproval of certain traits of Fandral and Volstagg that he considers silly and frivolous.

Sif ( Jaimie Alexander ): Sif is one of Asgard's most formidable warriors. She has great skill, is fearless, and is a reliable and loyal ally of Thor. When he was banished, she realized Loki's betrayal and risked everything to bring Thor back to Asgard. But then she discovered that she had lost Thor's heart to someone else - Jane Foster, a woman from Earth. As her long campaign for peace in the Nine Realms ends, Sif tries to rekindle her relationship with Thor.

Frigga ( Rene Russo ): Frigga is Odin's wife and the mother of Thor and Loki. It is she who holds the Asgard royal family together. She always knew that there was more to Thor's banishment through Odin than was apparent at first glance - just as she now also knows that there is more to Loki's wickedness than others can recognize. When Asgard is attacked, Frigga fights by all means to protect those she loves.

Odin ( Anthony Hopkins ): Odin is King of Asgard, protector of the Nine Realms and father of Thor and Loki. But Odin's long reign is drawing to a close. Although initially disappointed in Thor's arrogance, he now realizes that Thor is ready for the throne. But when an enemy from the distant past returns, Odin questions Thor's loyalties. If Thor is to be King of Asgard, he must put his duty above what his heart longs for.

The Collector ( " The Collector ") ( Benicio del Toro ): This figure, which will be presented for the first time here, a member who is oldest of the universe ( Elders of the Universe ), a group of quasi-cosmic essence and the last survivors of their respective races, who first appeared in Avengers # 28 (1966). His appearance is the prelude to the Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy , released in summer 2014 .

Reviews

Kino-zeit.de found that the finale "is a bit like the Greenwich version of the ending of Man Of Steel " and called the film "exciting, funny, visually imaginative and wonderfully crazy". For Cinema , the film was “significantly darker than its predecessor”, but in the “fast-paced finale […] the divine joke would come through again”.

“As pompous as Thor and the heroic epic around him, every detail of the world of the gods is just as powerful. Everything that makes the difference between you and the earth fits exactly with the hero of the story. In summary, the plot itself is entertaining, even if there isn't much behind it: a villain, a hero and a love story. The presentation, the characters and the relationship between them make Thor: The Dark Kingdom really interesting and worth seeing. "
