Marvel's The Avengers is an American action and science fiction - feature film from the year 2012 , of a comic book adaptation of the superhero team The Avengers (in former German translations "The Avengers") of the publishing house Marvel based. Directed by Joss Whedon , the leading roles are played by Chris Evans , Chris Hemsworth , Mark Ruffalo , Scarlett Johansson , Jeremy Renner and Robert Downey Jr. In the United States and Germany, Walt Disney Pictures is responsible for the distribution , but it is shown on movie posters in the Trailers as well as in the opening and closing credits of the film as a result of an agreement with Paramount Pictures instead uses the Paramount logo itself. In a secret research facility called Project Pegasus , the SHIELD organization is working on using the tesseract (see Captain America: The First Avenger ) as an inexhaustible source of energy. However, the cube from Asgard is also an interdimensional portal opener , and an alien power, the Chitauri, wants to use it to conquer the earth. To this end, they have made an alliance with the sir Loki , who knows the secrets of the cube (see Thor ). With his scepter , Loki opens a portal inside Project Pegasus through the tesseract , penetrates the facility and after a short fight kills some of the project's employees and Dr. Mind-controlled Selvig and SHIELD special agent Clint Barton (Hawkeye) . With the help of his agents Phil Coulson and Black Widow , Nick Fury , director of SHIELD, is recruiting several superheroes to help him recover the tesseract: the brilliant inventor Tony Stark and the gamma-ray expert Dr. Bruce Banner . Together with Captain America , they try to find a trace of the tesseract at the headquarters of SHIELD, an airworthy aircraft carrier called Helicarrier , which emits a faint gamma-ray signature.
A short time later, Loki and Hawkeye show up in Stuttgart to steal a sample of iridium . The superheroes confront Loki, who surrenders surprisingly quickly, and set off for the helicarrier. On the way, Thor intercepts them, who has come to Earth to bring Loki and the Tesseract back to Asgard. They have since found out that Fury wanted to use the powers of the tesseract to set up an arsenal of super weapons, which should arm the earth against an impending invasion of extraterrestrial forces. Incited by Loki's influence, the Hulk eventually breaks into Dr. Banner off and begins a rampage on the ship. At the same time, Hawkeye puts two of the helicarrier's turbines out of action, which threatens to crash, keeping Captain America and Iron Man busy, while Black Widow Hawkeye and Thor face the Hulk in a duel. However, as more and more enemy forces pour out of the portal, the Security Council , to which SHIELD is subject , decides , despite Fury's objection and regardless of the potential victims, to eliminate the threat posed by a nuclear missile. Alarmed by Fury, Iron Man intercepts the rocket in flight and steers it through the portal, where it destroys the Chitauri mother ship on the other side, thereby shutting down their combat units. With Selvig's help, freed from Loki's control, Black Widow closes the portal immediately after the unconscious Iron Man falls through and falls to Earth, where the Hulk catches him. Loki has to admit defeat to the Avengers in the end.

In the post-credit scene , the Avengers team is sitting in a restaurant in the middle of the devastated New York city center and silently indulging in a shawarma meal together , as Iron Man wished for after the final battle.

The Avengers as part of the "Marvel Cinematic Universe"
Marvel's The Avengers is the sixth film that is part of a larger, cohesive universe, the " Marvel Cinematic Universe ".
The first film, Iron Man (2008), introduced the character of Tony Stark, who became the superhero Iron Man as the film progressed. Pepper Potts, Phil Coulson, Nick Fury and the artificial intelligence Jarvis also had their first appearances in Iron Man as part of the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" and were embodied just like Tony Stark by the same actors and speakers as in Marvel's The Avengers . Since Tony had previously behaved unpredictably in the certainty that he would not live long, Natasha Romanoff classified him at the end of the film for the "Avengers Initiative" as unsuitable, which is why Nick Fury now only offered him a position as a consultant. Pepper Potts, Phil Coulson and Jarvis also appeared again and, like Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff and Nick Fury, were again embodied by the same actors and speakers as in Marvel's The Avengers .
The second film released, The Incredible Hulk , introduced the character of Bruce Banner as well as his alter ego , the Hulk. However, when a soldier was transformed into an even more monstrous monster (Abomination) and, unlike the Hulk, deliberately attacked innocent people, Banner intentionally turned into the Hulk to stop the creature. At the end of the film, Banner found refuge in British Columbia , Canada , and tried not to suppress the Hulk any longer, but to consciously transform himself into it and possibly even control it. In the final scene of the film, Tony Stark (played again by Robert Downey Jr. ) went to General Ross ( William Hurt ), the Hulk's pursuer, in a bar and informed him of the planned formation of a team. Chronologically, The Incredible Hulk is classified after Iron Man 2 , although the latter film was released later. In contrast to Marvel's The Avengers , Bruce Banner was still played by Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk , but after the latter fell out with Marvel regarding the length and thematic focus of The Incredible Hulk , the role for The Avengers was re-cast with Mark Ruffalo .
The fourth film, Thor (2011), introduced the character of Thor, his brother Loki, and the scientist Erik Selvig. During the course of the film, Thor met SHIELD and agent Phil Coulson. Clint Barton was also briefly seen, but was not yet referred to as "Hawkeye". After Thor got his full strength back, he let Coulson know that they were on the same side. At the end of the film Thor thwarted Loki's plans and destroyed the rainbow bridge Bifröst , whereupon Loki fell into the abyss under the bridge. In a scene after the credits, Erik Selvig was greeted by Nick Fury at SHIELD headquarters, but it turned out that Loki had survived and had come to Earth, where he influenced Selvig without Fury being aware of it. All characters were embodied by the same actors as in Marvel's The Avengers .
The fifth film, Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), was set largely around the time of World War II and introduced the character of Steve Rogers, who later became the superhero Captain America. At the end of the film, Steve crashed a plane in the Arctic Circle and was cryostatic from the serum in his blood that had turned him from a small, frail person into a tall, muscular man . It was not until decades later that he was finally discovered and revived by the SHIELD secret service. Nick Fury then explained to Steve that 70 years had passed since World War II.
