Chaux (German earlier Cha ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chaux lies at 428 m above sea level, about nine kilometers north of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The former street-line village extends in the foothills of the Vosges , in the Giromagny basin, which extends between the Vosges, the hills of the Forêt de Roppe and the Montagne de Salbert, in the plain west of the river Savoureuse . It is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

The area of the 9.26 km² large municipal area includes a section in the area of the Vosges foothills. The main part of the area is taken up by the plain of the Giromagny basin, which lies at an average of 420 m. It consists mainly of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The Savoureuse crosses the plain from north to south. To the west, the municipality reaches as far as the Rhôme floodplain , to the east as far as the Rosemontoise , both side streams of the Savoureuse. The Forêt de Vaivre extends between the rivers of Savoureuse and Rosemontoise . Along the rivers and in hollows there are numerous ponds that were once created for fish farming. To the west, the municipality extends to the wooded heights of the Tête de Chaux , on which the highest elevation of Chaux is reached at 530 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Chaux are Auxelles-Bas , Giromagny and Rougegoutte in the north, Grosmagny and Éloie in the east, Sermamagny in the south and Lachapelle-sous-Chaux in the west.

history

Chaux is first mentioned in a document in 1252 under the name Chas . At that time it was the center of a large parish. Initially under the influence of the Counts of Montbéliard , Chaux was always part of the Rosemont domain. In the middle of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , Chaux came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. Today Chaux is a member of the eight municipalities community association Communauté de communes la Haute Savoureuse .

Attractions

The Saint-Martin church, which originally goes back to a high medieval building, was rebuilt around 1770; the foundations of the tower are believed to date from the 11th century.

With 1147 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chaux is one of the smaller municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (814 people were still counted in 1911), a significant increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chaux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. Today there are some small and medium-sized businesses, including those in construction, transport and precision engineering. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D465 departmental road from Belfort to Giromagny. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. There are other road connections with Lachapelle-sous-Chaux, Rougegoutte and Éloie. Chaux is connected to the city of Belfort by a bus line. To the southwest of the village is the Belfort-Chaux airfield, which is now used in particular for gliding.

Community partnerships

A partnership with the northern Italian municipality of Brinzio has existed since May 4, 2013 .
