Vaudreching ( Wallachian in Lorraine ) is a French commune with 532 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2015 ). The place is on the Nied next to Bouzonville (road D3 towards Boulay-Moselle and Metz ), not far from the Lorraine border with Saarland .

History of the place name

In 1179 the place was first mentioned as Valdraca or Waldraca . Later known variants of names were Valdercka (1210), Waldinga (1314), Waldrick (1319), Valdergyen (1450), Walderca and Walderchen (1544), Weyllingn (1594), Valerchen (1599), Valderchen (1606), Vallerka (1633) and finally Valdrechen . The current name did not appear until 1741, but without the "g": Vaudrechin . Shortly before the French Revolution , the current spelling Vaudreching appeared in 1779 . From 1871 to 1918 the place had the German name Wallerchen , from 1941 to 1944 then Waldreich (derived from the historical Waldrick ).

Worth seeing

Every year at Christmas time, a huge nativity scene is set up in the choir room of the Saint-Remi church and attracts many visitors, including from neighboring Saarland. Festive lighting, Christmas music and moving scenes can be switched on by inserting coins.
