West Ham United (official: West Ham United Football Club ) - also known as The Irons or The Hammers - is an English professional football club in West Ham , a district of the East End of London located Borough London Borough of Newham . From 1904 to 2016, the club played its home games for 112 years in Upton Park ( Boleyn Ground ). Because of the nearby underground station of the same name, it is also known as Upton Park . The Hammers have been based in the converted London Stadium since the 2016/17 season . External training grounds are at Chadwell Heath and Rush Green .
history
The club was founded in 1895 as "Thames Ironworks FC". The Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company was a shipyard on the Thames in West Ham, then to the County of Essex and London since 1965 to belong. It was a kind of company sports team. The founders were the shipyard owner Arnold Hills and the foreman Dave Taylor. Initially, Thames Ironworks FC played in the local London League. In 1899 they got into the Southern League Second Division. After the club was converted into a company in 1900, it was renamed "West Ham United".
The first promotion to the top English division came in 1923. Since then, West Ham has won the FA Cup three times (1964, 1975 and 1980) and reached the final twice (1923 and 2006). In 1965 West Ham United was in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup at Wembley Stadium and won 2-0 against TSV 1860 Munich . This remained the only international title. The highest ranking in the former First Division was a third place. In the 2002/03 season, the team was relegated; the recovery failed with a loss to Crystal Palace . In the 2004/05 season, however, succeeded in returning to the Premier League and held the class in the following season with ninth place.
The club hit the international headlines in 2008 when it announced that it wanted to win over the controversial Italian ex-footballer Paolo Di Canio (himself a West Ham player from 1999 to 2003) as a professed fascist as a coach. In 2011 the club rose again.
In the Football League Championship 2011/12, the "Hammers" finished third, after having occupied first place for most of the fall, and qualified for the play-offs in which they beat Cardiff City 5-0 (2-0 First leg or 3-0 second leg). The play-off final took place on May 19 against Blackpool at London's Wembley Stadium ; West Ham won 2-1 and was promoted to the Premier League . The following season, 2012/13, they finished tenth in the Premier League. One season later, at the end of January, due to many injuries, they were in twentieth and thus last place in the table, but after some strong performances they were able to gain a foothold again in the midfield of the table and finished 13th after the last round.
Youth work - "The Academy of Football"
West Ham United is considered the talent factory of English football and calls itself "The Academy of Football". Active and former players such as Frank Lampard , Joe Cole , Michael Carrick , Glen Johnson , Jermain Defoe or Rio Ferdinand come from the training facility. The two English world champions Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters , who decided the final at Wembley with their goals, were also players of the club from the east of the capital of the United Kingdom . West Ham United's most famous player was and is Bobby Moore . The 1966 world champion , who is also the team's captain, still enjoys cult status throughout the country. He died in 1993 at the age of 51 from complications from a tumor.

Coat of arms and colors
The colors of the club are burgundy and (light) blue ( Claret and Blue ).
The coat of arms of the Thames Ironworks FC club initially consisted of just two crossed hammers - a reference to the shipyard. Around 1903/04 the representation of a castle was added. It represents the nearby "Green Street House", a prominent building in the area, which is also known as " Boleyn Castle " and to which the stadium owes its second name Boleyn Ground.
With the move to the London Olympic Stadium , a new club crest was chosen in an internet vote.

anthem
The club's anthem is I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles , the chorus of which is also sung by the fans in the stadium.
I'm forever blowing bubbles, pretty bubbles in the air
They fly so high, nearly reach the sky
Then like my dreams they fade and die
Fortune’s always hiding, I've looked everywhere
I'm forever blowing bubbles, pretty bubbles in the air
United! United!
The Cockney Rejects recorded a punk rock version of the anthem in 1980.
Fans
The fans of West Ham United feel the strongest rivalry against Millwall FC , which is based in south London and, like West Ham United, was founded out of a shipyard there. This rivalry was played out in public for a long time at the league cup match between the two teams in Upton Park ( Boleyn Ground ) on August 25, 2009 (final score 3: 1 a.d.). The worst riots in English football in years occurred, in which a man was injured in a knife fight.
There are also rivalries with other London clubs, particularly Chelsea, due to the long-running rivalry between the East End and the generally better-off West of the city.
The film Hooligans (in the English original Green Street ) refers to West Ham United and their hooligan group Inter City Firm (in the film they are called Green Street Elite ) and their rivalry with the hooligans of Millwall FC.
The films Cass - Legend of a Hooligan and Footsoldier also deal with the violent world of the Inter City Firm.
Steve Harris , the bassist of the band Iron Maiden , is one of the most prominent fans of the club and was active in the junior squad before his music career. He shares his passion for West Ham United with former bandmate Paul Di'Anno . Also the actors Keira Knightley , Ray Winstone , John Cleese , Russell Brand , Matt Damon , Dave Bautista and Danny Dyer as well as ex- Formula 1 racing driver Martin Brundle , the musicians Morrissey , Pete Way from UFO , Dave Grohl , Katy Perry , Rod Stewart and Prince Harry of Wales are big fans of West Ham. The 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama , is also a fan of the Hammers and Queen Elizabeth II , who kept it a secret for a long time. Even Dean Thomas , a character from the Harry Potter novels , is a fan of West Ham United. The famous film director and producer Alfred Hitchcock was also an avowed fan of the Irons .
