Le Mans 24 hour race, 1924

The second 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 2nd e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also the 2nd Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit Permanenthe de la Sarthe , took place from 14th to 15th June 1924 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .
The race
After the bad experience with the weather in 1923 , when the race was held in May, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest postponed the race to the second weekend in June. The regulations have been expanded. So now it was only allowed to refill fuel, water and oil after driving twenty laps. Of the 40 starters, only one vehicle did not come from France. John Duff and Frank Clement had redesigned their previous year's Bentley and now equipped it with front brakes. Three Sunbeams were registered, but did not show up for training and races.
In contrast to the quiet race of the previous year, the 1924 event was marked by numerous cancellations. After 12 hours, 19 cars had already failed, two of them in the first hour of the race. The opening phase of the race was dominated by last year's winner André Lagache , who was able to pull away from the field after record laps. However, it failed just like the long leading Lorraine-Dietrich B3-6 from Bloch and Stalter, which broke down at 1 o'clock in the morning with engine failure. This cleared the way for Duff and Clement, who, despite a long pit stop on Sunday afternoon, clinched their first overall victory for Bentley.
Changes in the final classification
After the race there were changes in the final classification, which mainly affected the number of laps driven by individual teams. The winners John Duff and Frank Clement completed 125 laps. However, the Bentley team canceled the last five laps because they were below the specified minimum driving time per lap. This correction had no effect on the position in the overall standings. The Brazilian TB4 of Eugène Verpault and Marcel Delabarre , where six canceled laps put the team back from fourth to seventh place, was harder than this .
Rudge Whitworth Cup
For the second time after 1923 the Rudge-Whitworth-Cup was held. This cup comprised the three races in 1923, 1924 and 1925 . Only teams that had already registered in 1923 were eligible to compete in the Triennale Cup in 1924. Since this did not apply to all of the starters, the Biennale Cup created a second coefficient evaluation . Again, a minimum number of laps for each registered vehicle was set in advance. The more laps driven were ranked by the vehicles in the cup rankings, where for unexplained reasons Eugéne Verpault and Marcel Delabarre the six laps were not canceled and they won the Triennale Cup with 112 laps. André Pisart and Joseph Chavée remained successful in a Chenard & Walcker in the Biennale Cup .
