Flórián "Császár" Albert [ ˈfloːriaːn ˈɒlbɛrt ] (born September 15, 1941 in Hercegszántó , † October 31, 2011 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian football player and coach . With his team Ferencváros Budapest , he won the Exhibition Cities Cup in 1964/65 . In 1967 he was the only Hungarian to be voted Europe's Footballer of the Year .

Career

Success with Ferencvárosi TC

Flórián Albert - often called "Császár", emperor - was one of the most dangerous strikers of his era and was praised for his elegance. From 1958 to 1974 he played exclusively for Ferencváros Budapest . In 351 league games he scored 256 goals and won four Hungarian championships . In 1972 he also won the Hungarian Cup .

At the international level turned Ferencváros with Albert on the way to the final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 1964/65 , among others, Roma , Athletic Bilbao and Manchester United out. In the final, which took place in Turin , Budapest triumphed 1-0 with a goal from Máté Fenyvesi in the 74th minute against Juventus Turin , thus bringing the only trophy of modern European cup competitions to Hungary.

World Cup top scorer with the national team

With Hungary he took part in the soccer world championships in 1962 in Chile and in 1966 in England . In Chile he scored four goals in three games and was tied with the Brazilians Garrincha and Vavá , Leonel Sánchez from Chile, the Yugoslav Dražan Jerković and the Russian Valentin Ivanov . Garrincha was chosen as the official top scorer of the tournament by drawing of lots .

With Hungary he also took part in the finals of the European Football Championships in 1964 and 1972 . Hungary achieved third and fourth place respectively.

Flórián Albert played a total of 75 times for his home country and scored 32 goals.

In 1967 he was voted Europe's Footballer of the Year , leaving players like Bobby Charlton , Franz Beckenbauer and Eusébio behind. In 1974 he ended his career as a football player after sustaining a serious injury in an international match against the Danish national football team .

After his playing career, he originally headed for a career as a coach. In 1975/76 he trained Al-Ahly Benghazi in Libya and in the following season he worked in the youth division of Ferencváros. In the end, however, he decided to work as a journalist.

On 21 December 2007, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Albert's election to the European Footballer of the year, it honored Ferencváros again by the venue of the Association, the 18,100-capacity stadium "Üllői út" in Stadion Albert Flórián renamed .

Private

His son Flórián Albert junior (* 1967) also became a professional football player. He played for Ferencváros Budapest , among others , and played six games for the Hungarian national team from 1993 to 1996. Flórián Albert senior died on October 31, 2011 a few days after heart surgery.
