history

In the then Parliamentary Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community , a socialist parliamentary group was established for the first time on June 23, 1953 (also Social Democratic parliamentary group , English Socialist Group , French Groupe socialiste ). From the 1970s until the 1999 European elections , it was the strongest parliamentary group in the evolved European Parliament. After the establishment of the PES as a European political party in 1992, the group was renamed the Group of the Party of European Socialists on April 21, 1993 . On July 20, 2004, the group was renamed the Socialist Group in the European Parliament to distinguish it from the SPE .

S&D was founded under its current name on June 23, 2009 after the 2009 European elections . The renaming was intended to enable the integration of the Italian Partito Democratico (PD): this center-left party emerged in 2007 from various parties that previously belonged to the social democratic and partly to the liberal faction in the European Parliament . Since some PD members refused to designate themselves as “socialists”, the new name should make it easier for them to agree to the joint faction. Four PD MPs were temporarily members of the European Democratic Party . In early 2014, the PD also joined the PES.
