Karl Fredrik "Freddie" Ljungberg (born April 16, 1977 in Vittsjö ) is a former Swedish football player . The midfielder comes from the youth of Halmstad BK and moved to Arsenal in 1998 , with whom he became English champions in 2002 and 2004 ( The Invincibles / Die Unschlagbaren ) . Ljungberg also played between 1998 and 2008 for the Swedish national team , with which he took part in two world ( 2002 and 2006 ) and two European championships ( 2004 and 2008 ).
Ljungberg has been a trainer since the beginning of 2016. He is currently assistant coach at Arsenal FC.
Club career
Ljungberg was born in 1977 in Vittsjö, Sweden. In 1982 he moved to Halmstad with his parents and younger brother . Since then he played for some time for the youth teams Halmstads BK . His first coach was Olle Ericsson. The former professional soccer player and Halmstad head coach accompanied him until Ljungberg was 14 years old. Ericsson was very impressed with the young football player and his way of playing passes. During his youth, Ljungberg skipped some youth teams and played in the club's junior team at 14.
Ljungberg also had a great talent for playing handball. He could even have played for the national team, but chose football.
On October 23, 1994 he made his debut in the Allsvenskan . Just a year later he was already a regular in the team. He also scored his first professional goal that year and won the Swedish Cup with the team. In 1997 he became the Swedish champion.
In 1998 Ljungberg signed a contract with Arsenal FC . The transfer fee was 3 million pounds, making it the most expensive transfer by a Swedish player to date. He was watched by scouts from the club from London for over a year. After an international match against England , Arsène Wenger approved the transfer despite not having seen the game.
In July 2007 Ljungberg moved to West Ham United . On August 6, 2008 West Ham broke the contract with the Swedish international.
At the end of October 2008, the American franchise Seattle Sounders announced the player's commitment. He was awarded a two-year contract worth five million US dollars. Ljungberg, who played as both left and right midfielder, was often in central midfield at Seattle. He also used to play as a hanging tip. At the end of the 2009 season he was appointed to the MLS Best XI .
On July 30, 2010, the Swedish ex-international moved to league rivals Chicago Fire . He made his first game against the LA Galaxy , where he was substituted on.
On December 27, 2010, he returned to Europe and completed a one-week trial training course at Celtic Glasgow . The move to Glasgow was announced on December 30th. On January 9, 2011, he made his debut in the shirt of the Bhoys. In the Scottish Cup game against Berwick Rangers he was substituted on in the 60th minute. In September 2011, Ljungberg signed a contract with Shimizu S-Pulse from the Japanese J. League , which he dissolved again in February 2012.
In August 2012 Ljungberg announced the end of his active professional career, which he revoked in September 2014 when he joined Mumbai City FC , for which he was then active until the end of the year.
National team
In his early days in Sweden, he played twelve games for Sweden's U-21 team .
In the Swedish national team he made his debut on January 24, 1998. After Olof Mellberg resigned from his position as captain of the Swedish national team on August 7, 2006, Ljungberg was appointed the new captain. After the EM in 2008 he ended his career in the Swedish national team. He played the last game in the Swedes jersey on June 18, 2008 against Russia.
Coaching career
In January 2016, Ljungberg took over the U15 of Arsenal FC .
At the end of February 2017, Ljungberg became assistant coach of Andries Jonker , who had previously been head of the Arsenal youth academy, at Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg . After the coaching team had achieved relegation in the 2016/17 season via relegation against Eintracht Braunschweig , the club split from Jonker and Ljungberg after a bad start to the 2017/18 season on September 18, 2017.
For the 2018/19 season Ljungberg took over the position of head coach of the U23 Arsenal.
For the 2019/20 season , Ljungberg became Unai Emery's assistant coach for the professional team. After the club separated from Emery, he took over the team as interim coach on November 29, 2019, which was in 8th place with 18 points after the 13th matchday. Ljungberg looked after the team in 5 Premier League games and one Europa League game and from the end of December he was again assistant coach of the new head coach Mikel Arteta alongside Albert Stuivenberg and Steve Round .
