Hagenbach town hall

Hagenbach is a French commune with 706 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It is part of the Altkirch arrondissement , the Masevaux canton and is a member of the Sud Alsace Largue community association .

geography

The municipality of Hagenbach is 17 kilometers south of Cernay and 18 kilometers southwest of Mulhouse in Sundgau . The Rhine-Rhône Canal forms the northern border of the municipality.

history

The place name is composed of the German words Hagen and Bach .

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the county of Pfirt , from 1324 to 1648 it belonged to the Habsburgs. The Hagenbach family was mentioned for the first time in 1291 as Seigneurs von Hagenbach, they had been in a feudal relationship with the Habsburgs since 1351 . Peter von Hagenbach (1420–1474), was appointed by the Duke of Burgundy as governor based in Ensisheim . He owned a castle in Hagenbach, which was destroyed in 1466 by troops of the Old Confederation .

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Hagenbach belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .

Culture and sights

On the Rhine-Rhône Canal near Hagenbach there is an inland port with boat rental and a well-developed cycle path.

St. Peter's Church

The baroque church of Saint-Pierre (St. Peter) was built in 1779.

economy

There was a brickworks in Hagenbach until 1972 . Today there are several craft businesses in the village, four shops and six farms. The primary school is organized together with the community of Gommersdorf . It has four classes, a kindergarten and a school canteen . The school building also houses the fire department equipment .
