Hyde County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Swanquarter .
geography
The county is located in eastern North Carolina, separated from the Atlantic by the offshore peninsulas , and has an area of 3688 square kilometers, of which 2101 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Tyrrell County , Carteret County , Pamlico County , Beaufort County, and Washington County .
Hyde County is divided into five townships : Currituck, Fairfield, Lake Landing, Ocracoke, and Swan Quarter.
history
Hyde County was formed in 1705 from the former Wickham County. It was named after the governor Edward Hyde .

As of the 2000 census , Hyde County had 5,826 people in 2,185 households and 1,433 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.65 percent white, 35.07 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian and 0.84 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.77 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.25 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,185 households, 26.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.7 percent of these were married couples living together, 13.1 percent were single mothers and 34.4 percent were non-families. 30.6 percent were single households and 13.9 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.94.
20.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64, and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For all females there were 112.2 males. For all women aged 18 or over, there were 115.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,444, and the median income for a family is $ 35,558. Males had a median income of $ 25,216 versus $ 20,482 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,164. 15.4 percent of the population and 10.3 percent of families are below the poverty line. 19.5 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 23.0 percent are 65 years of age or older.
