Election day for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia 2017 was Sunday, May 14th 2017. There were 125,711 citizens eligible to vote, of which 87,271 (turnout 69.42%) cast their votes. The preliminary result is as follows:

Ingrid Hack ran for the SPD for the first time and was able to consider Cologne I to be her party.

After the election, the SPD and the Greens formed a government coalition and Wolfgang Clement , who had been in office since June 17, 1998 after the resignation of Johannes Rau, was elected Prime Minister.
