The municipality of Nals is located in the Adige Valley between Merano and Bozen on the orographic right , western side of the valley. There it is the southernmost municipality of the modern district community Burggrafenamt , but Nals was not part of the historic Burggrafenamt . The center of the village is around 300 m above sea level on the alluvial cone of the Nalser Bach . Below that, the municipal area extends from the valley floor to the Adige . Behind the village the terrain rises to the central mountain terraces of Sirmian (600- 1000 m in). Nals finds its highest point on the northern foothills of the Mendelkamm at an altitude of around 1750 m .
Waters
The Nalser Bach, on whose alluvial cone Nals was built, arises just above the town center from the confluence of the Prissianer and Grissianer Bach. These waters have always been associated with a certain potential for danger. Most recently, in autumn 2001, a large part of the village was flooded by a mudslide from the Grissianer Bach. Despite the considerable extent of the mudslide, there were no casualties. Today two large valley walls, regularly dredged catch basins and a permanent laser monitoring system protect the village.
Specialty
An administrative curiosity is the district of Schernag at the top of the Nals alluvial cone. Although this has grown together with the center of Nals, it belongs to the neighboring municipality of Tesimo , whose main town is several kilometers away. The residents of Schernag see themselves as Nalsers, as their village life takes place in Nals. There have therefore already been several attempts to connect the district to Nals.
history
A settlement is already mentioned in the Churrätisches Reichsgutsurbar of 842/43 as "in villa Nalles" . In Nals, silver was mined in two mines . The place was on the Via Claudia Augusta . This is proven by the foundation walls of a Roman-era house discovered in autumn 2005. The excavations have been underway since spring 2006. According to preliminary estimates by experts, it is a building that was inhabited in the 6th or 7th century AD. The house had floor heating. Warm air was passed through a false floor. The house was also equipped with a Roman bathing facility. Furthermore, an apse was discovered, at the northern end of which an intact grave with the skeleton of an approximately 20-year-old woman was uncovered. Among other things, earrings and a glass pearl necklace were found as grave goods.
The lower part of the steeple of the parish church of St. Ulrich is over 700 years old; the patronage itself points to an old center of possession of the bishopric Augsburg in Nals. Furthermore, during the restoration of the parish church in the 1990s, bones were discovered under the church (today accessible through a marble slab). This evidence shows that Nals was settled as early as the 13th century.
Around the middle of the 15th century there is evidence of a church or chapel building consecrated to St. Vigilius , which was later lost; a document from 1451 names the church as "sand Vigily ze Nals" . The veneration of Vigilius is due to the earlier affiliation of the South Tyrolean Adige Valley to Merano with the diocese of Trento , of which St. Vigilius is the patron.

economy
Nals lives primarily from agriculture and summer tourism.
wine growing
Nals is officially allowed to call itself Nals on the South Tyrolean Wine Route . Viticulture has a very long tradition in the village. The Heiligenpergl grape variety is only grown in Nals. There is the Nals / Margreid / Entiklar cellar cooperative. The winery cooperative was able to achieve a leap in quality in its wines, primarily through its merger with the Unterlandler ( South Tyrolean Unterland ) winery Margreid / Entiklar .
The Schlosskellerei Schwanburg was another private winery in Nals and was first mentioned in a document in 1286. This made it the oldest private winery in South Tyrol. A few years ago the company was closed. The vineyard's harvest is now delivered to the Nals winery cooperative, where it is mostly cellared and sold under its own line.
Fruit growing
In agriculture, fruit growing , almost exclusively apple growing, is an important economic factor. A few years ago the fruit cooperative merged with a Bolzano cooperative to form the Frubona. Are separated asparagus and, in the fraction Sirmian, strawberries cultivated and Berg artichokes.
