At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , two table tennis competitions were held for both women and men: individual and team competitions. The double competitions, which were an Olympic discipline until the 2004 Summer Games , were canceled. The venue was the Peking University sports hall .

qualification

The following qualification criteria applied to women and men:

singles

Direct qualification

First of all, an adjusted world ranking was formed from the world ranking list from January 2008 , in which only the two best-placed athletes of a nation are taken over in the world ranking list, the remaining athletes were deleted.

The top 20 of the adjusted world rankings were directly qualified. Thus either two or one or no athletes from one nation are directly qualified.

Qualifying tournaments

Additional starting places were allocated through continental qualification tournaments, with a maximum of three athletes from one country per gender being allowed to participate in the games. Each nation was allowed to send at least one and a maximum of three representatives into the qualifying tournaments, depending on how many had qualified directly via the world rankings (3 minus the number of those directly qualified). In these qualifying tournaments, six starting places were awarded for Africa , eleven for Asia , eleven for Europe , six for South America , three for North America and three for Oceania .

World qualification tournament

Three more starting places were awarded at a final qualifying tournament, in which athletes from all continents could participate, and a wildcard was left open for the last starting place .

Teams

16 teams took part in each of the team competitions. China as the host nation was automatically qualified. Furthermore, each of the six continents (North and South America count separately) were awarded a quota starting place. This went to the best-placed team on the continent in the team world rankings, provided it was able to send three individual starters to Beijing. If no country sends three individual starters from a continent, the best team with two individual starters takes part in the team competition; if no two starters were sent by any country, the top-ranked team was qualified with a single starter. The remaining nine starting places were allocated based on the team world ranking. The nine teams that were highest in the world rankings and sent at least two individual starters to Beijing qualified. In the event that there were fewer than nine nations with at least two individual starters, the best-placed countries with a single starter moved up. In the event that host China also qualified as a continental representative of Asia and thus a place became free, ten instead of nine starting places were awarded via the team world ranking.

Qualified athletes

With Timo Boll , Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Christian Süß and Werner Schlager , Chen Weixing and Robert Gardos, both Germany and Austria were able to provide the full contingent in the men's singles in Beijing.

Two Germans, Wu Jiaduo and Elke Wosik, and two Austrians, Liu Jia and Li Qiangbing, qualified for the women .

The full list of qualified athletes was published on July 11, 2008 by the ITTF ( International Table Tennis Federation ). A total of 78 women qualified and 77 men qualified.

Individual competition

The individual competition was held in the knockout system . Whoever lost a game was eliminated from the tournament and the winner moved on to the next round. Four sets of wins were played per match.

The individual players entered the tournament in different rounds. The placement in the seeding list of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is used for this. The following table shows the different phases.

Team competition

A team consisted of three players from the same nation. To win an encounter, a team had to finish three games victoriously. An encounter consisted of at least two singles and one double. If no decision was made after these three games, one or two additional singles were played until one team had won three games. Each player on a team could only be used twice per match. In the case of five games per match, everyone was used twice; one player in two singles and the other in one single and the double. The system was chosen so that a player cannot collect all the points necessary to win. It was called the Beijing System .

The team competition initially consisted of a group stage. Afterwards, a knockout system was used. In each game, three sets of wins were played according to the same rules as in the individual competition.

In the group stage, the 16 teams were drawn into four groups of four. Everyone played against everyone here. The first in the group made it to the semi-finals, in which they played for a place in the final and finally for the gold and silver medal. The runners-up play a separate semi-final. The two winners played with the losers of the semi-finals of the group winners in the knockout system for the bronze medal.

useful information

  • The age range of the participants ranged from 15 years for men ( Marcelo Aguirre , Paraguay) to 46 years ( He Zhiwen , Spain), for women from 16 years (Noha Yossry, Egypt) to 45 years ( Ni Xialian , Luxembourg).
  • There was a dispute in advance when Jörgen Persson and Jean-Michel Saive finished 20th in the adjusted world rankings with equal points. The decision of the world association ITTF to prefer Persson, because he had an advantage of 0.25 points, was controversial. For the future, it was therefore determined that the previous world rankings will be used in the event of a tie.
  • The Swede Matilda Ekholm qualified athletically for the participation, but was not allowed by the Swedish NOK due to a lack of success. The Tunisians Nesrine Ben Kahia and Safa Saidani , the New Zealander Karen Li and the Dutchman Trinko Keen had a similar experience .
  • Table tennis player Li Jia Wei from Singapore carried the flag at the opening ceremony.
