List of units of the engineer force of the army of the Bundeswehr

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of units of the engineering corps of the army Bundeswehr contains almost all resolved, active and non-active (equipment units gekaderte battalions ) associations and major units of the engineering corps of the armed forces as well as a brief overview of their time of preparation, deployment locations, insinuation and their resolution or renaming.

Pioneers and comparable forces in the Air Force and the Navy are expressly excluded .

Introduction to the numbering conventions

From Army Structure II until around 1990, the pioneer units were numbered using a stringent numbering convention. During this time, the name could usually be taken directly from the subordination of the battalion or regiment. In the event of a change of subordination, reclassification, etc., the number has usually been consistently adapted, apart from exceptional cases. Conversely, during this period, associations with the same number cannot always be seen in the same line of tradition. After 1990 and the incorporation of parts of the disbanded National People's Army and the considerable reclassifications in the years after the end of the Cold War , this adjustment was often no longer made; the associations often kept their name by tradition. Your assumption can usually no longer be derived from your number. However, certain conclusions can be drawn about their origin and tradition. In the following, the system is presented according to the size of the associations. However, the following considerations on the system of the designation remain to be understood only as a basic concept, even for the period before 1990. In the case of troop attempts, in the formation and disbandment phase, etc., deviations from the rule are repeatedly encountered.

Commands

Pioneer commands were roughly brigade strength and were planned both in the field and in the territorial army. In the field army, the three German corps I – III were each subordinate to a pioneer command with the corresponding serial numbers 1, 2, 3. In the territorial army, pioneer commands were subordinate to two of the territorial commands. The territorial command south led the pioneer command 850 (all subordinate commands had the number 850!), The territorial command north led accordingly the pioneer command 800 (all subordinate commands had the number 800!). The territorial command of Schleswig-Holstein , like the corps LANDJUT deployed in northern Germany, did not lead a pioneer command. (The territorial command of Schleswig-Holstein led a similarly large pioneer regiment with the Pioneer Regiment 60).

Brigades

Engineer brigades were set up in 1991 in what were then still eight defense areas . Their serial numbers 10, 20, 30, ..., 80 correspond to the numbers of the military area commands I – VIII . The Pioneer Brigade 100 was one of the brigades of the Army Troop Command . Like all brigades of the Army Troop Command, his engineer brigade was given the order number 100.

Regiments

In the territorial army before 1989 in the military areas II-VI pioneer regiments with the order numbers 7x were set up, where x corresponds to the number of the military area command to which the regiment was subordinate. The conspicuously large Pioneer Regiment 60 of the Schleswig-Holstein Territorial Command can be seen as a “replacement” for the “apparently missing” pioneer forces in Northern Germany. It offered a replacement for the non-established pioneer commands for the territorial command Schleswig-Holstein and LANDJUT or the "missing" pioneer regiment (71 - would be the obvious designation) in defense area I. The “missing” pioneer commands would have been according to the usual designations in these areas of the army presumably carried the numbers 6 or 600, so that the Pioneer Regiment 60 also received a correspondingly similar serial number. Prior to 1989, appropriately numbered non-active (equipment units) pipeline pioneer regiments 80 and 85 were set up for the operation of the NATO pipeline in the pioneer commandos 800 and 850 of the Territorial Army .

The Pioneer Regiment 100 arose later from the reclassification of the Pioneer Brigade 100 and continued its number.

Bridge battalions and independent companies

The first swimming bridge companies were set up as early as 1956. Between 1959 and 1966, many of the companies were incorporated into the newly established heavy engineer battalions. When Army Structure III took over at the beginning of the 1970s, most of the companies were detached and placed under the corps' newly established floating bridge battalions. When Army Structure IV was taken, more floating bridge battalions were set up, this time with the pioneer commandos of the territorial commands. In 1991 two more floating bridge battalions were set up in the engineer brigades of Defense Areas VII and VIII. In 1993/94 all floating bridge battalions were either dissolved or reclassified and renamed into engineer bridge battalions.

  • Floating bridge battalions in Army Structure III: All battalions were equipment units with an active 2nd company. The floating bridge battalions of the corps emerged from parts of the heavy engineer battalions. The battalions were given the numbers 60, 60 and 70 as the sixth and seventh battalion of the corps' pioneer commandos. The 5./sPiBtl X10 became 2./SchwBrBtl X60 and 5./sPiBtl X20 became 2./SchwBrBtl X70 in the 1st and 2nd Corps (X stands for the number of the corps). The floating bridge battalion 360 of the 3rd Corps was only created at the end of the 1970s from the renaming of the floating bridge battalion 860. The floating bridge battalion 810 (subordinated to sPiRgt 80) and the floating bridge battalion 860 (subordinated to sPiRgt 85) were set up with the same structure in the territorial commands North and South. The equipment in all battalions was 100 meters of hollow-plate bridge equipment per company.
    The battalions were divided into:
    • Rod
    • 1. Headquarters and Supply Company (GerEinh)
    • 2. Swimming bridge company (HP)
    • 3rd Swimming Bridge Company (HP) (GerEinh)
    • 4th Swimming Bridge Company (HP) (GerEinh)
  • Floating bridge battalions in Army Structure IV: The floating bridge battalions of the corps were reclassified while maintaining the numbering. The hollow plate bridge device was brought together in the 2nd company and remained active. The inactive 3rd and 4th companies were reclassified into a pioneer company (GerEinh) and the 5th was reorganized. At the Northern Territorial Command, the 2nd Company of the 810 floating bridge battalion was reclassified into an inactive company and a second battalion was set up as a device unit. In the Territorial Command South, the heavy floating bridge battalion 880 was renamed floating bridge battalion 850 and remained partially active. By 1985 four more battalions were set up as equipment units.
The basic structure of the battalions was:
    • Rod
    • 1. Headquarters and Supply Company (GerEinh)
    • 2. Swimming bridge company (HP) *
    • 3rd pioneer company (GerEinh)
    • 4. Pioneer Company (GerEinh)
    • 5. Pioneer Company (GerEinh)
  • The 2nd company is a unit of the floating bridge battalions 810, 811, 860, 861, 862 and 863.
  • Exception at the Schleswig-Holstein Territorial Command: In
1981 the partially active Swimming Bridge Battalion 660 was set up. The 1st / staff and supply company, 2nd / swimming bridge company with hollow plate bridge device and 6th / swimming bridge company with SE bridge device were partially active, the 3rd /, 4th / and 5th / pioneer companies were not active. The SchwBrBtl 670 (GerEinh) was only set up in 1989 from the heavy swimming bridge company 631 (GerEinh). The battalion is divided into staff and supply companies, a transport company and three swimming bridge companies with hollow-plate bridge equipment. In peacetime, both battalions were subordinate to the 41 disposable troop command and in the V case to the 60 engineer regiment.

Engineer Bridge Battalions

The Pioneer Bridge Battalions were set up in Army Structure 5 (N) . They were formed from various pioneer units. There was one active and one inactive battalion, and each was subordinate to an engineer brigade. The equipment of the active battalion was the same as that of the inactive battalion of the engineer brigade. The structure provided for a staff and supply company, a technical company, a field replacement company and three swimming bridge companies. The equipment of the individual swimming bridge companies varied from battalion to battalion. Each battalion had one company with hollow sheet equipment and one with folding swim bridge equipment. The 3rd company was different either a 2nd with a folding swimming bridge device or with an amphibious device. The number of the battalion is the same as the battalion from which it originated (e.g. PiBrBtl 130 was the AmphPiBtl 130, PiBrBtl 160 (GerEinh) was the SchwBrBtl 160 (GerEinh) etc.). The Pioneer Brigade 50 did not have any Pioneer Bridge Balallons in Army Structure 5 (N) , instead an active and inactive PiBtl in addition. Just three years later, when the army structure "NHFNA" was taken over in 1997, all active engineer bridge battalions were reclassified and renamed into heavy engineer battalions. The equipment units existed up to the army structure "Army of the Future", 2002. That was the end of all engineer bridge battalions.

Pipeline pioneers

The troop units of the pipeline pioneers were located in Army Structure IV with Pipeline Pioneer Regiments 80 and 85, as well as with Pioneer Regiment 60, which in turn were based in the Territorial Commandos North and Territorial Command South and Territorial Command Schleswig-Holstein of the Territorial Army. The main task was the operation, construction, maintenance and repair of the NATO pipeline, which had strategic importance for supplying NATO troops in the territory of the Federal Republic. At the beginning of the designation of these troop units one could read off the affiliation to one of the regiments (60 = Pioneer Regiment 60; 80 = Pipeline Pioneer Regiment 80; 85 = Pipeline Pioneer Regiment 85).

Amphibious pioneers

At the beginning of the 1970s, the amphibious units were grouped into battalions and concentrated in the corps' pioneer commands. They were the 5th Company of the Division Engineer Battalions and the independent amphibious companies. In Schleswig-Holstein 5./PiBtl 6 was spun off, renamed AmphPiKp 601 and subordinated to PiBtl 6. The battalions were given hundreds and 30 for the 3rd battalion (AmphPiBtl 130 = PiKdo 1 etc.). The battalions and company were equipped with amphibious bridge and translation vehicles, assault boats, heavy motor boats, wheel planers and folding road equipment. With the capture of Army Structure IV, another, 5th Company, was set up as a device unit (the 5./AmphPiBtl 230 was active) and the AmphPiKp 601 was renamed AmphPiKp 600. The story of the amphibious engineer battalions ends after 22 years. In 1993 all amphibious engineer battalions were reclassified and renamed into engineer bridge battalions, the AmphPiKp 600 was dissolved.
The battalions were divided into:

  • Rod
  • 1./Stabs- and supply company
  • 2./Amphibious pioneer company
  • 3./Amphibious pioneer company
  • 4./Amphibious pioneer company
  • 5th / Amphibious Pioneer Company (equipment unit) set up in Army Structure IV

Special pioneers

The technical special companies (pipeline pioneers) were formed in 1993/1994 from the disbanded pipeline pioneer battalions. The task of the independent companies is the same as that of the pipeline battalions before. The operational area is now limited to that of the defense area. In 1997 the company was renamed and reclassified. Now they called themselves special pioneer companies (pipeline). In 1999 and 2000, the first field camp operating companies were formed. In 2003, parts of the independent companies were dissolved and the rest were integrated into the three newly established special pioneer battalions. Now the special engineer battalions are concentrated in the armed forces base. With the adoption of the new Bundeswehr structure , only the 164 Special Engineer Battalion will remain.

  • technical special companies (pipeline pioneers): With the capture of Army Structure 5 (N), the technical special companies (pipeline pioneers) were set up from the disbanded pipeline pioneer battalions. Two companies each, an active and a device unit, were set up in the newly established pioneer brigades. Initially there were eight active companies (one per PiBrig) and six units (PiBrig 10 to 60), in 1996 another (TechnSpezKp (PplPi) 801 (GerEinh)) was set up from the TechnSpezKp (PplPi) 201 (GerEinh) that was to be dissolved. The companies received the following numbering scheme: the active ones received hundreds of numbers and the device units one hundred and one (SpezKp (PplPi) 200 and SpezKp (PplPi) 201 (GerEinh) is subordinate to PiBrig 20). There were two exceptions: The PplPiKp 601 was renamed TechnSpezKp (PplPi) 601, it kept the number out of tradition. Since the number 601 was now occupied, TechnSpezKp (PplPi) (GerEinh) of the PionierLehrbrigade 60 was given the number 602. In 1997, all companies were renamed and reclassified as Spezialpionierkompanie (Pipeline). The company is divided into company command with:
    • Company command group
    • Exploration, planning and operations team
    • Telecommunications group
    • Medical Corps
    • Supply group
    • Repair group
With 4 active trains and 1 inactive train
    • Pipeline pioneer train
    • Pipeline pointing and tank farm service train
    • Pioneer machine train
    • Security train
    • Tank farm train (GerEinh)
  • Special pioneer companies (pipeline): With the adoption of the army structure “New Army for New Tasks”, the technical special companies (pipeline pioneers) were renamed and reclassified as special pioneer companies (pipeline). The numbering and inscription remained the same. The order and the StAN equipment (Pers and Mat) remained almost unchanged. In 1998 the last company, the Special Pioneer Company (Pipeline) 701 (GerEinh) in Gera, was set up. At the beginning of 2003, some companies were dissolved, others were incorporated into the newly established special pioneer battalions.
  • Field camp operating companies: The first field camp operating company was set up in Speyer in 1999. It was given the number 400 and was subordinate to the Pioneer Brigade 40 as an independent company. A year later the second, the field camp operating company 800 in Penzlau, was set up. Due to the deployment of Bundeswehr units abroad, it became necessary to set up companies that have the opportunity to set up and operate a field camp. A company can provide for, look after and accommodate up to 2,700 soldiers in a field camp. The company consists of three identical field camp operations trains; in exceptional cases they can individually supply up to 900 soldiers in a field camp. A train consists of:
    • Field camp operation group pioneers
    • Pipeline Pioneers Group
    • Energy supply and supply group
    • Pioneer machine group
The company command and supply group corresponds to that of an independent tank engineer company in a brigade. At the beginning of 2003, the field camp operating companies were transferred from the army to the armed forces base and incorporated into the newly established special pioneer battalions.
  • Special pioneer battalions: The three special pioneer battalions were set up at the beginning of 2003 from the field camp operating companies and special pioneer companies (pipeline) coming from the Army. They are subordinate to the logistics regiments of the military area commands I and IV. They received the final number 4 (as 4th battalion of the logistics regiment) and the number of the regiment (SpezPiBtl 164 = LogRgt 16, SpezPiBtl 174 = LogRgt 17 and SpezPiBtl 464 = LogRgt 46). The battalions 164 and 464 were divided into: headquarters and supply companies, three field camp operating companies, two pipeline pioneer companies and two pipeline pioneer companies (GerEinh), the SpezPiBtl 174 had only four field camp operating companies. In 2005 battalions 164 and 464 were reclassified again. They received two additional field camp operating companies and dissolved the pipeline pioneer companies (GerEinh). The Special Pioneer Battalion 174 was dissolved on March 31, 2007, two companies were integrated into the Special Pioneer Battalion 164 before it was dissolved. Today the battalions are divided into:
    • 1./Stabs/VerKp
    • 2./FlgrBetrKp
    • 3./FlgrBetrKp
    • 4./FlgrBetrKp
    • 5./FlgrBetrKp
    • 6./FlgrBetrKp
    • 7./PplPiKp
    • 8./SpezPiKp (fire protection)

The special pioneer battalion 464 is intended to be dissolved in the realignment of the Bundeswehr .

The 164 Special Pioneer Battalion was expanded on January 1, 2016 and at the same time reclassified to the 164 Special Pioneer Regiment.

Independent pioneer companies

Pioneer companies

The pioneer companies were set up in Army Structure IV, from 1981 onwards as equipment units and belonged to the homeland security brigades of the military areas (II to IV) and the disposal troop command 41. The numbers were based on the homeland security brigades (HschBrig 52 = PiKp 20, HschBrig 62 = PiKp 620 etc. .). They had the task of supporting the subordinate units of the Homeland Security Brigades in reinforcing and securing the movements with pioneer machines. In 1986 the PiKp 510 was set up as an active company. Most of the companies, together with the Homeland Security Brigades, were disbanded in 1993 when Army Structure 5 was taken. The PiKp 510 was transferred to the field army and integrated into the PzBrig 18. The PiKp 610 (GerEinh), which is subordinate to PiBrig 10 and renamed and reclassified in TechnPiKp 610 (GerEinh). The PiKp 550 (GerEinh) was subordinated to the newly established German / French Brigade, renamed the PzPiKp 550, reclassified and activated.

Pioneer Companies (ZMZ)

The pioneer companies are partially active and were set up in 2009 as supplementary troop units within the framework of civil-military cooperation (ZMZ). The companies are assigned to an active association in a color relationship. They were given the number 900 (for supplementary troops), 50 (for company) and 1 to 3 for the consecutive number. The assignment is to provide additional pioneering assistance to the association and to support domestic disasters. A pioneer armored group with 26 soldiers is active, in addition, in the event of an alarm, up to 101 reservists.
The company is divided into:

  • Company command group
  • Technical group
  • 2 pioneer meshes
Each move is divided into:
  • Platoon troop
  • Armored Engineer Group
  • Pioneer machine group
  • Pioneer equipment group
  • Additional staff (enables shift work (12/12) within the train)

Tank engineer companies

The tank engineer companies were set up from Army Structure 2 (from the end of 1958) and were usually directly subordinate to the brigades. According to the nomenclature, the first digit (for the brigades with the numbers 1 to 9) or the first two digits (from brigade number 10) stood for the respective brigade, ie the tank pioneer company 150 was assigned to the tank brigade 15. From Army Structure 5 (from 1992) onwards, the tank engineer companies followed the fate of their brigade in many cases and were gradually disbanded.

Pioneering technical companies

The technical pioneer companies emerged in 1993 from the pioneer machine companies of the disbanded pioneer battalion of the military areas (II to VI) and from the Pioneer Company 610. They were only set up in the old military areas and subordinated to the pioneer brigades as independent companies. They received hundreds of numbers (TechnPiKp 200 = PiBrig 20 etc.), with the exception of the technical pioneer company in Pioneer Brigade 10, they kept the number of Pioneer Company 610. The order was to support other units in reinforcing and securing the movements with pioneer machines. The independence only resisted for a short time, with the takeover of the "NHFNA" army structure in early 1997, they were reintegrated into the renamed heavy engineer battalions as the 3rd Company (GerEinh).
The companies were divided into:

  • Company command group
  • Pioneer machine train
  • Road maintenance pioneer train (3 trains)
  • Medical Corps
  • Supply group
  • Repair crew

Pioneer teaching regiments

The Pioneer Training Regiment emerged from the Pioneer Training Battalion in August 1959. It was subordinate to the newly established heavy Pioneer Training Battalion 210, the Pioneer Battalion 4 and 5 other independent companies. By 1961 companies were outsourced, new ones incorporated or moved. In October 1961 a second battalion was set up by combining the independent companies. Now the regiment was under 2 battalions with a total of 17 companies. Until 1974 there were only small shifts. In April 1974 the regiment was renamed and reclassified as Pionier-Lehr- und Versuchs-Regiment 87, the second battalion was dissolved and the companies became independent again. The regiment now consisted of the heavy engineer battalion 210 and five independent companies. It was dissolved at the end of March 1981 and its units were used to set up new units. The regiment had a teaching and support mandate and was directly subordinate to the pioneer school.

Pioneer training centers

When Army Structure IV was taken , four pioneer training centers were set up. They were subordinated to the pioneer commandos (800 and 850), the disposable troop command 41, the territorial commandos. The numbering corresponded to that of the pioneer commandos (800 = PiKdo 800, 850 and 851 = PiKdo 850) and in the territorial command Schleswig-Holstein the training center was given the number 600. They had the order to train the reservists of the inactive pioneer units . In addition, each training center had specific tasks.

  • PiAusbZ 600: NCO courses (reserve),
  • PiAusbZ 800: NCO courses (reserve), courses for pioneer machine operators and ferry drivers
  • PiAusbZ 850: NCO courses (reserve) and pioneer machine driving schools
  • PiAusbZ 851: Support of the pioneer school with pipeline courses and troop trials with pipeline equipment, training as tank farm sergeant and officers

With the takeover of Army Structure 5 (N) at the end of 1993, all pioneer training centers were dissolved again. The staff was called in for the new engineer units to be set up.
