Protvino ( Russian Протвино ) is a town in Moscow Oblast , Russia . It is located 116 km south of Moscow and 15 km west of Serpuchow on the Protva River , right on the border with Kaluga Oblast , and has 37,308 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

history

Protwino was built in 1960 as a settlement near the physics research institute that was founded at the same time. Originally known as Serpukhov-7 , Protvino received the status of an urban-type settlement on January 22, 1965 and the current place name, which is derived from the Protva River.

In 1989 Protvino was granted city rights.

Economy and Transport

The main employer Protwinos the Physics Research Institute (official name: Research Institute for Physics of High Energies ., Russ Институт физики высоких энергий ), the protons - particle accelerator to 1972 of the world's largest of its kind was. There is also a branch of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Protvino. Due to the great importance of the scientific institutions for the city, it has the status of a Naukograd , literally " City of Science".

There is also food, furniture and electrical engineering industries in Protwino. A software development company also operates in the city.

There are important transport connections, including to Moscow, via the neighboring Serpuchow , where there is a connection to the M2 trunk road and the Moscow – Kursk railway line .
