The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium ( RFK Stadium for short ) is a stadium in the US capital Washington, DC. The owner is the city and the stadium is administered by the DC Sports & Entertainment Commission . The stadium currently offers 45,423 seats. In its history, the sports facility was mainly used for American football , baseball and soccer .
history
On October 1, 1961, it opened as the DC Stadium . It was the home of the Washington Redskins American football team for 36 years . The Redskins played their first game against the New York Giants (21:24) on the opening day in front of 36,767 spectators , in the presence of US President John F. Kennedy . In 1997, the Redskins moved to Landover , Maryland , where they play their games at FedExField . The RFK was also home to many other Washington sports teams.
On January 18, 1969, the venue was renamed the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in honor of the 1968 assassinated US Senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy .
In 1994 five games were played in the RFK as part of the soccer world championship and in 2003 six group games of the women's soccer world championship were held as a double event . It was also the venue for the Military Bowl , a college football final game, from 2008 to 2012 .
The national soccer team of the United States has played a total of 22 games in the RFK Stadium, more than in any other stadium in the world. On June 2, 2013, as part of the celebrations for the 100th birthday of the US Football Association, she won 4: 3 against the German national football team .
From 1996 to 2017 played at RFK the Major League Soccer - Franchise D.C. United . On October 22, United played their last league game in the stadium. In front of 41,418 spectators, the home team lost 2-1 to rivals New York Red Bulls . For the 2018 season, the team is moving to the newly built Audi Field .
