Saint-Chef is a French municipality with 3585 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of La Tour-du-Pin and the canton of Bourgoin-Jallieu . The inhabitants are called Saint-Cheffois (es) .

geography

Saint-Chef is located in a swampy area in a very calcareous soil. Saint-Chef is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Salagnon in the north, Sermérieu in the northeast, Virginieu in the east, Montcarra in the south and southeast, Saint-Savin in the south and west, Saint-Hilaire-de-Brens and Trept in the northwest.

Saint-Chef is part of the Pays des Balmes Dauphinoises wine region .

history

With the establishment of the Abbey of Saint-Chef by the monk Theudère de Dauphiné around 500 in the former village of Arcisse, the beginning of today's community, which arose to the east of it, heralded. In the Middle Ages the place was called Saint-Cher . In the revolutionary times between 1790 and 1794, the then still independent communities of Arcisses , Chamont , Crucilleux , Laval-de-Saint-Chef , Montcarra , Trieux and Vercin were incorporated. These incorporations were later partially reversed.
