The Toyota Crown is a passenger car series by the Japanese manufacturer Toyota , which has been in production since 1955 and is currently in the fifteenth generation. Since 1991, the most expensive versions have been called Crown Majesta , which are separate, stand-alone models.
In 1980 the Crown came to Germany as an attempt by Toyota to establish itself in the upper middle class. It was the third Japanese sedan after the Datsun 240 K-GT and the Datsun / Nissan Laurel with a six-cylinder petrol engine in Germany. The engine was equipped with a L-Jetronic - injection system equipped and provided at 2.8 liters capacity 107 kW (145 hp). The equipment was remarkable for the time and the vehicle was comparatively inexpensive. Even the basic version i for 23,495 DM at that time had electric windows , central locking and automatic low beam switch-off . The Si equipment variant, which was 3,000 DM more expensive, was also equipped with air conditioning , a car radio and an automatic antenna; an automatic transmission cost 1,300 DM extra. The Toyota Crown was unsuccessful in Europe, and sales outside of Asia were soon discontinued due to poor sales. From 1993, the Lexus GS was instead available on the same platform in these markets .
In 1987 Toyota introduced the world's first CD-ROM -based car navigation systems to the Crown . The Crown is the most popular taxi in Japan alongside the Nissan Cedric . Called Toyota Crown Comfort or just Toyota Comfort , the model is also very popular as a taxi in Hong Kong and Singapore .
