Coat of arms of the departments of France
This list shows the coats of arms of the departments of the Republic of France .
Most of the French departments do not have coats of arms, but logos that can change. Of the coats of arms listed in this list, only around a third are official, the others have no state character. The officially accepted coats of arms are also used in different ways and intensities: partly by all, partly by only a few authorities in the respective departments. In 1950 the French heraldist Robert Louis published his work "Symbolic Signs of the French Départments" ( Marques symboliques des départements français ), in which he proposed a coat of arms for each department. Some departmental councils ( conseils generaux ) adopted these proposals, others adopted other coats of arms, and many have still not used a coat of arms. In the coat of arms list of the French Wikipedia , the officially accepted coats of arms are highlighted in gray.
