Zuani is a French commune with 30 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Corse department on the island of Corsica .
geography
Zuani is located at an average altitude of 712 meters above sea level in the Corsica Regional Nature Park on a mountain ridge in the south of the Castagniccia , 48 kilometers southwest of Bastia , the seat of the prefecture of the department. The municipal area has an area of 5.16 square kilometers. Zuani is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Ampriani , Pianello , Mazzola and Pietraserena .
Zuani is assigned to a climate zone of type Csb (according to Köppen and Geiger ): warm, moderate rainy climate (C), maximum precipitation in the summer months of less than 40 mm ((s) summer dry), all months are below 22 ° C, but there are still at least 4 Months that are warmer than 10 ° C (b). There is a Mediterranean climate with a moderate summer.
history
Zuani was founded in 771 by refugees who had left Rome due to frequent attacks by the Lombards . One of the founders was the Andrei family, whose descendants still live in Zuani, for example the current Maire ('Mayor') Paul Gluganti.
In 1824, the municipality of Aléria was formed from parts of the municipal areas of Zuani, Moïta and Pianello. In 1800 Zuani had 276 inhabitants. From 1886 to 1911 the population increased. The community had the most residents in 1911 and 1931 (540). After that, the population decreased.

Culture and sights
There are several hiking trails in the municipal area and various rural hostels. There is a tennis court and a swimming pool operated by the U Pianto association. The village is surrounded by nine towers that date from the time of the Pisan occupation .
The 16th century monastery of Saint-François de Zuani is now in the municipality of Ampriani. With the French Revolution (1789–1799) it became a national property . The monastery cells in the west wing were converted into drying rooms in the 19th century. Today the monastery is privately owned and in 2008 it was added to the list of Monuments historiques ('historical monuments').
The parish church of Sainte-Marie is built in the Baroque style. The front door was made around 1760. It is richly decorated and classified as a monument historique . Its decoration depicts the Annunciation . Two paintings in the church are also classified as historical monuments. One painting dates from the 17th century and was probably originally in Zuani Monastery. The second painting was created in 1796. Both paintings show the Virgin and Child and various saints . A group of sculptures from the 18th century shows the same theme and is also classified as a monument historique .
