Culture and sights

In Zalana there are two churches, the parish church de l'Annonciation (' Annunciation ') and the chapel of Santa Maria. In the parish church there is a 17th-century painting depicting Salome carrying the head of John the Baptist on a tray. The painting was classified as a Monument historique ('historical monument') in 2005 . The residents of Zalana financed the restoration of their parish church themselves with donations. For this, the municipality received the second prize from the Fondation du Patrimoine ('Foundation for Cultural Heritage') in 2010 .

A Genoese bridge, dating from the time of the rule of the Republic of Genoa over Corsica (1447–1768), runs over the Bravona .

On August 15th, the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary , the residents of Zalana organize a procession with a statue of the Virgin Mary from the church to the market square. Various stands with food and games are then available on the market square. At this event, visitors come from the surrounding villages.

On the evening of December 31st, the children of Zalana walk through the village and go to every house. They ask for food and sing traditional songs of praise or mockery, depending on whether or not they have received small donations in the form of meat and sausage products, sweets or drinks. After the move, the children gather and have a feast. This custom is called La Birba .
