Ortale is a French commune with 25 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Corse department on the island of Corsica .
geography
Ortale is located in the Corsica Regional Nature Park in the Castagniccia , 43 kilometers southwest of Bastia , the seat of the prefecture of the Haute-Corse department. The municipal area has an area of 4.06 square kilometers and is at an average height of 515 meters above sea level , the Mairie is at an altitude of 440 meters. The mountain village is from the department of road happened D71.
Population development
In 1800 Ortale had 252 inhabitants. Then the population increased until 1851 when the community had over 340 residents. Then the population decreased again. In 1990 Ortale only had 17 residents. Since then there has been a slight increase again.

Culture and sights
An inventory of Ortale's buildings in 2003 and 2009 on behalf of the Corsica Regional Council (Collectivité Territoriale de Corse) examined 25 buildings. 60 percent of the houses date from the 17th century, 20 percent from the 18th century. The walls and roof tiles of the houses are made of slate . Some of the buildings have sheds that are used to dry chestnuts . The mairie ('mayor's office') shares a building from the first half of the 18th century with the sacristy .
To the east of the town center there is a cemetery chapel from the 19th century, which was also built from slate. It is privately owned and is not in very good condition. Another chapel is located south of the town center. This Sainte-Marie chapel was built in the Middle Ages . Today only parts of the nave and the apse with a cul-de-four vault remain.
The parish church of Sainte-Marie is in the center of the village. It was built in the 17th or 18th century and restored in the 19th century. The elongated nave has a barrel vault . There are several paintings and sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries in the church. A cup of brass from the 16th century.
economy
In the municipality there are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for brocciu , honey (Miel de Corse - Mele di Corsica) , olive oil (Huile d'olive de Corse - Oliu di Corsica) and chestnut flour (Farine de châtaigne corse - Farina castagnina corsa) as well as protected Geographical indications (IGP) for wine (Ile de Beauté blanc, rosé or rouge and Méditerranée blanc, rosé and rouge) .
