In the 1991/92 season of the 2nd Bundesliga , 1. FC Saarbrücken and Bayer 05 Uerdingen were promoted to the Bundesliga . It was the first season with the participation of the teams from the former GDR .

mode

Due to the inclusion of six teams from the GDR Oberliga , the league was divided into two groups of twelve teams each. First, a normal round of points games (22 games) was carried out. Subsequently, the two leagues were divided into a championship and a relegation group; the points from the first round of the league game were retained. The two masters rose. The last two teams in each season had to be relegated. The third last played a relegation with the second in the Oberliga Nord (the master of the Oberliga Nord played, like the champions of the other nine leagues, in a separate promotion round). The winner qualified for the following season in the 2nd Bundesliga.
