Camden County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Camden .
geography
The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of North Carolina, borders Virginia in the north , is about 30 km from the Atlantic Ocean in the east and has an area of 792 square kilometers, of which 168 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Currituck County , Tyrrell County , Pasquotank County, and Gates County .
Camden County is divided into three townships : Courthouse, Shiloh, and South Mills.
history
Camden County was formed on April 8, 1777 from parts of Pasquotank County. It was named, like the district capital Camden, after Sir Charles Pratt, Earl of Camden , a supporter and promoter of the American colonists before the American Revolutionary War . The county was the site of the Battle of South Mills on April 19, 1862 as part of the American Civil War .
Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 23, 2018).

Camden County's population was 6,885 as of the 2000 census . 4 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,662 households and 2,023 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.62 percent white, 17.27 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.57 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.96 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.71 percent of the population.
Of the 2,662 households, 31.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.2 percent of these were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers and 24.0 percent were non-families. 20.7 percent were single households and 9.5 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64, and 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 96.9 men of the same age group.
The median income for a household (median) was 39 493 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 45,387. Males had a median income of $ 36,274 and females $ 24,875. The per capita income was $ 18,681. 10.1 percent of the population and 7.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 12.6 percent of them are children and young people under the age of 18 and 20.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
