Cantello (until 1895 Cazzone ) is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality is located about 5 kilometers east of Varese on the Rio Ranza and borders directly on Switzerland and the province of Como . It covers an area of ​​9.13  km² . The Gaggiolo and Ligurno factions belong to Cantello . The neighboring municipalities are: Arcisate , Cagno (CO), Clivio , Malnate , Rodero (CO), Stabio (CH-TI), Varese and Viggiù .

history

A Jupiter altar is still preserved from Roman antiquity . The church of Santa Maria di Campagna with its campanile lies on foundations from the late 11th century. In 1976 the district of Velmaio was removed and the neighboring municipality of Arcisate was added.
