The 2003/04 DEL season was the tenth season of the German Ice Hockey League . The regular season began on September 4, 2003, the play-off round was played from March 10. The German champions became the Frankfurt Lions , while the newly promoted Wölfe Freiburg had to relegate to the 2nd Bundesliga after a play-down defeat against the Hannover Scorpions .

Mode and rules

While the best eight teams in the preliminary round qualified for the play-offs, the last two played in a play-down round against relegation. For the teams in positions nine to twelve, the season was over after the preliminary round.

Play-downs

The bottom two of the table, Hannover Scorpions and Wölfe Freiburg, played from March 10th in a play-down series in the best-of-seven mode against relegation. Hannover had the first home right due to the better placement in the main round, which then changed in every game.

Quarter finals

The quarter-finals were played from March 10, 2004 in the " best-of-seven " mode. The best-placed team in the main round, the Eisbären Berlin, met the eighth-placed DEG Metro Stars, the second-placed Nürnberg Ice Tigers against the seventh ERC Ingolstadt, the third, the Hamburg Freezers, the sixth-placed Adler Mannheim and the fourth-placed Kölner Haie against the Frankfurt Lions who finished the main round in fifth.

Semifinals

The semi-finals were held from March 26th and, like the finals, in the " Best of Five " mode. The best-placed team in the preliminary round met the worst-placed team, while the second-best team in the preliminary round met the third-best placed.

The final series was played from April 8th. The Eisbären Berlin had the first home right due to their better placement in the main round.

The Frankfurt Lions became German champions for the first time in their club's history , although they had been relegated last year and only remained in the league after the Schwenninger ERC Wild Wings had their license withdrawn .
